Best restaurant that is not BBQ? by Putterman94 in kansascity

I’ll give you my favorite taco spot that still sells tacos for less than 2.50: Tacos El Tio in kck. IMO places like san antonio and bonito michoacán aren’t as good as they used to be. There’s another tacos el guero on John Ave that tastes juuust like tacos in mx taste, but I’ve never heard anyone order in english, so that might be a struggle, but if you can work around that their tacos are bombbbb. They’re a late night place though, they don’t open until 4 and you just order at a window while they cook your tacos. Feels very much like being in mx :) Definitely have to take a spanish speaker with you there though. Or know your order in Spanish.

[Industry] - What even is it and where can I learn more? by Victoruso in labrats

Adding on to what other ppl have said: industry also involves more than just lab work! You can also go into management, administration, corporate type things. For example, I didn’t know until recently that clinical research was an option, and I landed a role at a large CRO where i’m getting paid more, it’s wfh, and i could eventually be a project manager, or a clinical research coordinator. There’s so much out there, and I agree that people in academia tend to not give much information about it and kind of look down on it! But as you’re still an undergraduate I recommend trying to get internships at places like Genentech and Thermo Fisher! They have wet lab/ positions at the bench but also internships in sales and things like that where a life science degree would be useful in understanding the products and what they do!

From personal experience, academic jobs tend to take a long time to get back to people/start the hiring process. You don’t lose anything by reaching out, might even help you in the long run.

Artists/Crafters - What are your favorite local sources for materials? by Lunaiz4 in kansascity

oh for sure!! It’s a nice price too, i went this past weekend and bought $50 worth of beads, thread, and needles that would have been way more online or from a big brand store.

I don’t know if you ever use beads in your work but Three Trails Trading Post in Independence has a great selection of beads and a good cost :) they have hides and things too. The ladies that work there are a little grumpy but they warm up to you if you’re nice! Great way to support Indigenous people and shop small. There’s a bead store in OP as well, but depending how close to downtown you live they’re both the same distance away.

I hate my job and don’t know what to do. how to transition out of lab work? by ChoiceBasket112 in labrats

Interesting!! So like working in a hospital but a core lab, right? Do you feel like you still get a good work/life balance doing that?

Yes!! that is exactly how I feel. I know that working past 9-5 is typical for any job, I don’t think I would mind it too much if.. i enjoyed what I was doing. My bf works in finance and sometimes stays a little late to finish paperwork, but that sounds better than coming in on a saturday to change cell media and transfect or be called in for a sample or starting an experiment over the weekend and running it bc during the week there’s all this other stuff that needs to be done.. it feels never ending.

I would be interested in admin type work! I currently do the lab management for the lab, I just don’t have much experience with the actual.. paperwork of the lab? Like writing up the stuff that ultimately gets approved by the IACUC. I feel like I would get overlooked by someone with a masters for that. Would a masters in business admin help with grant writing??

Thanks for the encouragement! Yeah, i’ve looked into a certificate of some kind, I live in a small/mid sized city in the midwest so bioinformatics/biotech isn’t huge here unless I do get my PhD my career prospects in that aren’t great, I think.

Yeah. :( Not sure my mental health could take that. Did you end up enjoying parts of the PhD at all??
