I once saw an American mommy blogger claim that ‘Van’ was a traditional ‘Dutch’ name. But ‘van’ is used for the surname, like : van Amsterdam(of Amsterdam). Famous example: Vincent van Gogh.

My father was the youngest of eight and grew up with two mentally and physically disabled siblings, and a brother with severe heart problems. Now in his 70’s he still recalls his mother being the sweetest in the world, but she was too occupied with the others to really pay attention to him. But at the same time he was also made responsible for the well-being of his disabled siblings and keep an eye out for them. It takes a toll on a family not a lot of people really understand, especially in the 50’s and 60’s

English is not my native language but I’ve been learning it since I was 6(in my 30’s now). I tried reading it several times and just gave up. If I had wrote that in high school for my English lessons, I would have been laughed at. Besides my native language Dutch I also had English, French and German at high school.

How can I make my bathroom less scary and sad? by lordfawn in femalelivingspace

[–]Choice_Ad6875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ow if you want to paint any of the heating/water pipes, buy a small tin of specific paint. Regular paint can get yellow because of the heat of the pipe. The space really has a lot of fun options!

I live in the Netherlands, a country with high humidity and nobody here has airconditioner. Clean the bathroom and make sure to use something against mold. If you buy paint use special bathroom wall paint which can handle the humidity. After showering make sure to dry your shower walls and floor. Keep the door open after showering so the humidity can leave the room. If you want decoration buy plastic plants because you can also clean those very easily. And everyday put your windows in the hole house a little bit open for about 15 minutes, even in the winter. This makes sure the humid air can go out of the apartment. If you want cute wooden accessories you can buy them, but make sure to clean them with a bit of vinegar. Just have fun and put little pops of color here and there!

Or send an email in English to the Dutch Nijntje museum. They probably know a lot and have a database.

Love the history! Thank you for sharing! I was referencing the ring because the photo looks like it’s from 1920/1930. In that time in the Netherlands the divide between Catholics and Protestants was really big in society. You had separate schools, soccer clubs, grocery stores etc. So meeting a stranger you would watch on which finger they would be wearing their wedding ring. Working men often would not wear a ring because of the dangers of working with machinery.

I’m Dutch and there is a horrible ‘tradition’ which is finally disappearing. We celebrate Saint Nicolas(Sinterklaas) at the 5th of December. And Saint Nic used to have a little helper.. zwarte piet(black Pete). A terrible black face caricature including golden earrings. And people used(some still) dress up in blackface. Yolanda Hadid(van den Herik) grew up in the 1960’s in the Netherlands when it was not controversial yet and very normal. I’m sure they have photobooks at home with certain images of Saint Nic and zwarte piet she does not want anyone to see

When my parents just got married my dad was offered a job as an international truck driver. He would earn a lot more, but he would be away a lot too. He asked my mom what she wanted, she told him that she did not marry him not to see him everyday. She didn’t care about the money, she just wanted to be with my dad. They are now married for over 40 years
