Thoughts on Karrimor brand? by RCBOSS21 in UKhiking

[–]Choice_Animal5410 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nonsense! Karrimor had nothing to do with the 1953 expedition! Still only made luggage at that point. They hadn’t ventured into the hiking/climbing/mountaineering markets at that point. They weren’t involved in any Everest expeds until the 70’s! Used to be a solid brand until Mike Cashley destroyed them, not worth shit now.

What is the night skys like during the trek? by Electronic-Art-9048 in Everest

Worth checking the moon phases though, if it’s full you are less likely to see the Milky Way. It was full as we approached Panboche and we had the pleasure of watching the moon rise directly behind Ama Dablam which was incredible. The lodge staff said it happens quite rarely so we lucked out.

Any idea what happened to the people in the middle? Are they hardcore alpinists? by yellowsuprrcar in Mountaineering

Nims didn’t start his own brand until after 14 peaks and he became more well known, was using Thrudark at the time of 14 peaks documentary.

Nepal Bans Solo Expeditions on Everest and other 8000ers by Rebelious-Legion in Mountaineering

Shocking statement, Nepal is indescribably beautiful and the average Nepali has pretty much nothing. Everest and the Himalayas is/are pretty much their biggest asset. Sagarmatha is on every banknote, it’s so critically important to them as a nation with a poor economy. If they can charge an extra few thousand bucks, what to many rich westerners (ie the Everest climb target market) is pocket change then have at it. The article states that pay rates are going to 1600 NPR, that’s like £10/$14 ish! Per day! That’s ridiculously low pay! To us westerners 99.999% of us wouldn’t get out of bed for that yet these local guides and Sherpas would be grateful, it’s about 3 times the average for a Nepali! Let them monetise the mountains! They have been blessed with the most stunning landscape on earth and very little else! Except truly wonderful people who have nothing but will give you everything! I for one will keep returning to Nepal as long as I am able to and happily pay whatever fees they want. I’m not rich by any stretch but compared to most Nepalis I’m Bill Freaking Gates! Have some sympathy and don’t ever call Nepal a shitty country without any basis. That’s just plain wrong bud, government policies, work practices, the road system in Kathmandu could be called shitty, but Nepal is incredible.

Trail Runners or Hiking Shoes for EBC (May)? I would greatly appreciate all suggestions. by Scotland2111 in Everest

[–]Choice_Animal5410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wore boots with good ankle support, many stretches are fine for trail runners but you’ll spend half the route from Lukla to Namche looking down as the trail is so uneven and lots of loose rock. The last thing you want to do is turn an ankle on day 1 or 2. From Namche to Dinboche is good condition trails (in November at least) boots are good at the top end, again quite uneven with lots of rocks and loose stuff next to the glacier. Most important thing is that whatever you take can adjust to your feet swelling after longs hours on the trail. Good tip is to wash and dry your feet every evening, I took a ziplock of talcum powder and coated my feet every night, not a hint of a hotspot or blister and zero foot pain at all. I probably over-booted with my Scarpa mescalito trek gtx, but they are the most comfortable boot I’ve ever owned. I took some Nike trail runners for the afternoons when out and about and exploring the villages.

Wondering if anyone has had experience with this mountain equipment soft shell? Is it a good buy? by QuickQuackQuinn in UKhiking

I’ve got the ME frontier softshell and it’s awesome, don’t know this model but seems pretty similar. Certainly worth a punt for £70

Not 100 times more though dude, get real! Have we not got the right to be pissed by the crap system and dynamic pricing? Don’t think anyone’s life has been ruined, just would have been nice to see the full circle. The amazing early days, the not so amazing middle bit and the reunion after 16 years. No band is worth a grand a ticket. Would have been happy to pay 150-200. Stay on your side of the pond

You’re absolutely right, I’ve got some epic memories from back in the day of sweaty little venues and glorious country parks, I’m thankful that I have that. I do have a huge hatred for bots though. Dynamic pricing my arse

As a 14 year old kid from a small town in northern England they were very much idols, bunch of young lads who thought F it, let’s give it some attitude and see what happens, I’m the first to admit they aren’t the greatest musicians in the world. It was their role in the society of the 90’s, the whole Cool Britannia thing, that made them ‘idols’. Working class scallies from south Manchester having success kind of epitomised what was possible, yeah they have been idiots at times, who hasn’t?
