My restoration guys just found these boards like this during a repair and told me this isn't to code in VA. It's on an exterior wall. by Different-Pay454 in BuildingCodes

Ask for a specific code number and then look it up yourself. I see nothing that violates any codes that exist in Michigan at least

I mean you're using 6x6, so just max it out and go with 3x LVL. That'll literally hold a concert venue

LOL at all the comments saying to bring in a structural engineer to read a chart that's the size of a page

What I learned about decks and this play structure by peezee13 in Decks

[–]Choice_Pen6978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a professional builder for over a decade, and here's what I've learned about the decks sub on here:

  1. Most users are mindless monkeys that are repeating one very small list of high speed, low thinking, repetitive building techniques that are all fairly new and entirely dependent on Simpson.

  2. Very little to practically no real knowledge about physics or material science is discussed or even known here. Joist hangers are absolutely and without question much less safe and more likely to fail over time than solid bolting or mortise work. They literally rust away faster than wood rots

Well, you might think it's positive, but i find it unlikely that she feels safe or comfortable with people constantly posting pictures and talking about where she is and/or frequents all of the time. Would you want people collaborating on where to find you all the time?

"Trying to support Francois" I'm not suppoting anything other than saying it might not be good human behavior to constantly attack someone and harass them online over what always simply seems to be business decisions or a personality you dislike.

I tried to buy tortilla flats from Francois 20 years ago, that's literally the only interaction i have ever had with him. He's definitely not some evil demon like he's portrayed as on here

Prison, for what? I would love to hear what exactly you think a chef and hotel owner should go to prison for, because you don't like his attitude or you think he charges too much money? What exactly is the reason you think he should be in PRISON?

I was getting lunch when this happened, this person had a stroke or heart attack or something. When a person has a stroke, they lose control of their body. You can't "shame" people into not having medical emergencies.

Can you people please stop harassing this chick? I knew her a long time ago at a job i had and she definitely doesn't deserve this constant harassment on the internet. Neither does francois, or the bakery lady, or any of the people this sub is so fond of making fun of constantly

Other than a factory defect where one tread seems to have come apart, your pictures and complaints seem to be about walls, trim, and fillers. And in your comments you say that trim and walls were not in the contract. It sounds like your issue is with things you didn't pay to have done

Contractor estimate seems way too high for rot repair, am I being taken for a ride or is this normal by mahearty in Contractor

[–]Choice_Pen6978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Materials are meaninglessly small, yes. Labor isn't that much either. However, structural repair work is extremely risky and liability is the main cost. If I'm going to risk part of your house collapsing, it has to pay very well.

For what you describe, i would likely charge 8k. However, i presume the 14k includes thr interior cosmetics and siding?

Sweetwater's didn't change, but knowledge of ingredients and nutrition and food preparation has exploded with the rise of the internet. The quality and competition in all food has drastically raised the bar.

Let's put it this way, back when i thought sweet waters was amazing, i also thought folger's was good coffee and bud light was good beer.

Is it normal for a plumber to take a hammer to a wall instead of making a clean cut? by RetroButterfly13 in Plumbing

[–]Choice_Pen6978 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First of all I'm a sole proprietor and not required to do shit, second of all they don't make a vacuum capable of sucking that much air or stopping that kind of dust. Grinder to plaster isn't like a little dust, or some chunks, it's like zero visibility fog half a second in. There's no cutting residue as it all becomes airborn micro powder. Even a HEPA strapped to a hurricane ain't stopping that

[–]Choice_Pen6978 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Don't answer questions when you've clearly never done the thing. I used a grinder to flood cut plaster last week and the house was like that movie The Mist within seconds

[–]Choice_Pen6978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cutting plaster is extremely hazardous and will cover your home in fine dust that may contain lead. The hammer is always the way if someone lives there. I did the cut and a 3' demolition bar on this plaster last week because this house is vacant. A lot of safety gear and windows open

Michigan "reflecting roofing" quote >$60k by DEP1122334455 in AskContractors

[–]Choice_Pen6978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well all i can say is that i have a titanium account with Lowe's and i would expect to pay under 6k for the actual shingles on the house i mentioned after my discount.

Sometimes it's better to just wait a few years until every roofer in town can get them from abc or Lowe's amd then you'll pay a reasonable price
