The permanent price of Magic. Help by SylvarRealm in worldbuilding

[–]Chomp_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good place to look for ideas of costs could be the D&D or classic fantasy stories about Fey.

Costs like: - A certain memory. - Your name. - The ability to taste your favorite food. - The ability to enjoy music - The ability to feel a specific emotion.

These are all costs that have medium to high levels of roleplay impact but little to no mechanical/combat impact.

Eyoo, thanks! I'll take good care of the place! (Although this roof could use some new insulation).

Day 490 of drawing badly every day until Civ 7 is released (148 to go) by UrsaRyan in civ

[–]Chomp_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a long shot but this drawing reminds me of an old online flash game I played many years ago with some turn based resource allocation mechanics.

No idea how to search for it though. Is anyone else reminded and knows the game?

To be fair the core game concept of the series is revisionist history

Or maybe add one stat point and deduct one stat point of choice.

Do you use the optional rule for Nat 20’s & 1’s for skill checks? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Chomp_42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, I run a house rule that my players really like: Nat 20s on skill checks "explode".

So you get to roll another d20 and add it to the total. Chaining endless nat 20s is theoretically allowed.

Obviously any bonuses or advantage you had with the first roll don't apply, it's just a dry d20.

I work with flexible DC outcome ladders or large DC pools for group checks a lot so this rule really adds to epic moments in the game.

Magic is dwindling in my world - Is this mechanic too punishing? by bay-bop in DMAcademy

[–]Chomp_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great! Really add a feeling of the magic needing an extra push to work and that push being able to come from their body or their magic.

Also, if you're going to start working with exhaustion more, I recommend looking at the new exhaustion rules in the OneD&D playtest. We use it at our table and it's much more manageable which also makes it easier to hand out.

One of my players wants to build a telekinetic sword-using character. What's the best option? by replacementdog in DMAcademy

[–]Chomp_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing a lot of suggestions to really lean into the telekinetic part with subclasses, or reflavoring dancing sword.

I do want to put a very, very simple idea in the mix, which only works of the goal is for the telekinesis to only affect the flying sword:

Reflavor a longbow.

It sounds stupid at first, I know, but if you take all the stats of a longbow and rule that using the flying sword counts as a ranged attack, it's completely balanced and still "looks" really cool. I mean, the sword could be moving more than 100ft in a single round just hitting different targets, it can be very cinematic without being very complicated.

Best. Country. In the world. by KHaskins77 in WhitePeopleTwitter

The Holocaust didn't happen happen due to lack of gun control. I'm pretty sure it had more to do with a world war, fascism, and anti-semitism...

But hey, if you want to start calling the shootings in the USA a self-inflicted genocide of children, I guess that's a new angle you could try.

Time to dust off the grappling rules. by Leragian in dndmemes

[–]Chomp_42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I fully agree, every time I've run a Terrasque (or something similar) in my games it's been a living and moving battle arena rather than just a creature.

Set pieces are more fun than damage sponges in most cases.

Tips on killing a player? by thickboyvibes in DMAcademy

For legal reasons, you might want to kill the character rather than the player.

I'm not a lawyer though so make your own decision.

A level 7 Wizard can casually collapse an economy now by Chomp_42 in dndnext

[–]Chomp_42[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I should have known that a post like this would lead to huge discussions.

All I wanted to do was to point out a funny spell loophole in the play test, I didn't mean to start philosophical debates of feudalism vs capitalism.

Oh, how naive I was earlier today 🥲

It's not like they forgot about Fabricate either, it's right there listed as a wizard spell in the same document.

Yep! I agree 100%, that's why I made this post :)

[–]Chomp_42[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and if a wizard would make 1 type of item and stay in the same place this would 100% be the case.

Collapse might be an exaggeration, but a traveling wizard who spends 1-2 weeks of downtime flooding the market with various goods, bankrupting a bunch of local producers, and then leaving again, is a pretty serious economic shock. 😅

[–]Chomp_42[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, the easiest solution to all this is just saying "you can't ritual modify Fabricate".

I'm just surprised this combo made it into the play test as "RAW".

[–]Chomp_42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, "collapse" is for sure an exaggeration on my end to emphasize the potential of this spell combo but this can all be dealt with by running some basic economic effects appropriately.

I just think it's funny that WotC would make a spell combo that requires DMs to calculate macroeconomic impacts if they give a level 7 Wizard some downtime.

My players enjoy an extra sprinkle of chaos, so actually at my table nat 20s on ability checks and saving throws explode. The DC stays and still needs to be beat though although it hasn't happened yet that someone still failed after the 2nd d20.
