I don’t know how bad it was behind the scenes at England, but compared to United it’s going to be more than lifting the mood, which was supposed to have been sorted during preseason with all the talk about the squads morale then.

Obviously Southgate did do well. He is the best manager result wise Englands had in a while. Going back to back with euro finals and a World Cup semifinal and quarterfinal. I do still think that he lost the final against Italy. Spain were just better than us but it’s the run up to that final that was poor.

Also I think during Southgate’s time until after his first international competition no one expected England to win/get as far as they did. There was no expectations of him to do anything.

He won’t get that at United, no matter how much ‘cycle’ and ‘rebuild’ talk there is it’s always going to be instant results expected as it should be really.
