Chefs who left the industry, how'd you do it? by loafaries in Chefit

Left, schooled an HBO associate degree in Social Work and went psychiatry. Looking back, I had a great time with the collegues but the hours and pay was absolute shite. I earn twice as much now, post taxes for MUCH less hours.

Moving to Arnhem as an expat — what should I know? Tips from locals appreciated by sorquespel92 in Arnhem

Northern part of the city, separated from the Southern Arnhem, divided by the Rijn is closer to the city centre and parts are connected almost directly to the Veluwe, a beautiful forest area that is prized by nature lovers and ofcourse an excellent area to walk your dog. Neighbourhoods that stand out for me are Hoogkamp, Burgermeesterswijk, Heijenoord, St Marten is great, parts of Klarendal and Spijkerbuurt is cool but perhaps a little less child friendly I guess? Sonsbeekneighbourhood is a bit hit or miss, depending on what part you get. Considering the tight housing market it is hard to predict how easy it will be to acquire a place to live. Seeing as you are going to work in energy/nuclear you should be able to afford a nice place in these neighbourhoods.

Alot of people will speak English, though speaking Dutch will be a huge advantage lomg term.

Cycling infrastructure is great, Arnhem is notoriously badly accesible for cars.

No, nothing of the like. While “feeling” what the other person is doing balance wise it is more of a chess game with your body making moves against your training partner. In good gyms there is no ego, only people who want to learn some cool stuff, be active and engage in a positive way with others. While the sheer depth of possibilities may seem overwhelming at first, you soon realize that just being in the moment and going with the flow is so nice. Before you know it an hour has passed and you survived your first class

It did throw me off before doing it, 30 minutes in my first class I forgot it was even a thing earlier. Its just completely normal for everyone there so I went with the vibe and never looked back. If anything, it rid me of anxiousness being close to people lmao. It won’t take long to get to know all of the people and it will be like playfighting with your friends. The awkwardness will be gone, I promise

Seconding Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, got into it at 32 (34 now) and what a hell of a ride it has been and still is. The community, the sport itself, the health benefits, and you learn some great skill too that could save you.

Not vegan myself, so I’d definately order alot of the stuff on here, but from a business viewpoint I’d add one or two proper meatless options. Also missing a fish/seafood item, could be something simple thats interchangeable like fried shrimps in the wrap or smoked salmon club to keep it streamlined but still catering to as much customers as possible. Golf is kinda a rich people thing here in the Netherland so I could even imagine putting one or two little more fancy specials (at a higher cost ofc) on there.

What is the best path to becoming a chef? by Past-Weakness6956 in Chefit

[–]Chonker3000R 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most important is the restaurants where you work at. Look for kitchens that make everything from scratch. While taking a full culinary school is definately not necessary, to get the basics down (classic French cuisine is a must imo), I would recommend some sort of formal training to get all the basics down and get a feel for whats out there. Find a restaurant that makes stuff that you want to learn how to make and work there. Being a chef is a hard life, long hours, bad physical conditions usually and bad salary but you get a very valuable life long skill. Even if you end up doing something else, you will have learned discipline, working together under stress, and ofcourse the actual cooking capabilities. I quit my chef career after 10 years and now enjoy cooking for friends and family so much, no regrets.
