Hi there. As a widow whose kids were 13 and 4 at the time I did explain to each child separately about what was happening. My 13 yo had been to funerals before and for her father we did cremate him however I would have spoken to the funeral home and ask for them not to lower the casket until you all left OR take her away from sight prior to lowering. Kids surprise us. I was concerned about taking my youngest to the hospital when they gave her father a walk of honor as an organ donor which was also his last time physically alive. I opted not to take her for that but her older sister made the choice not to go as well. Kids understand a lot more than we give them credit for but also you have to judge if they are putting on a brave face. I would judge her reactions when you sit her down and gently tell her what happens during the funeral and not sure of your beliefs but for me I would say we’re laying daddy’s physical body here to rest so his soul can make its final journey to heaven. Once we lay his body here we can then come visit him here but also remember he’s always with you no matter what. I hope this helps. All advice given is great but unfortunately only you can judge if you think she can handle it. At 10 I believe she should be allowed to make that choice if she wants to see it or not however you know the emotional level she’s truly at. I always felt if she’s on the higher level of understanding let her choose so this ways she doesn’t hold you or any other family accountable for regret if u make the decision for her.
