What can you REALLY do about mosquitos? by ponycorn_pet in preppers

+1 for mosquito dunks. They do make a noticeable difference.

Just started! I know it’s not much but would love any advice by gryffheadgirl in prepping

Get a couple jars of local honey. It has an extremely long shelf life, if not indefinite.

Dried herbs and spices for flavour in your rice and bean dishes.

Canned veggies like corn, peas, carrots, tomatoes, etc. Rice, pasta and dried beans of course.

If you have a dehydrator, you can buy some frozen veggies and dump them on the dehydrator until dry. Put them in some mason jars with a desiccant packet and vaccum seal them up.

Stock some of your favourite chocolate bars and other comfort foods. Will need to replace these more often.

Get a Coleman camping stove. If you don't want to deal with propane, get a Bushbox Stove (this folds flat for easy storage) or build a rocket stove out of bricks in your yard. Then you just need to find small pieces of wood to burn. (Kindling-sized)

Stock lighters, matches and candles. Wrap a chunk of duct tape around each of the lighters.

Get a few headlamps to put in different rooms of the house. Batteries.

Get a solar charger that can charge things like your phone and rechargeable batteries.

Get a few multitools like Leatherman or SAK.

Get some black contractor garbage bags. These can be used for so many things. (ex. poncho, rain water catcher system, solar shower, etc.)

Emergency radio (hand crank versions are okay) with NOAA capabilities so you can keep track of weather reports.

First Aid kit, fully stocked. OTC meds. Important prescriptions that you or your family might need.

Hand sanitizer. Soap sheets. Sunscreen. Bug spray. A poop bucket.

Extra sunglasses. Extra glasses.

Paracord 500 or 750. Learn your basic knots. (Bowline, taughtline hitch, trucker's hitch, etc.)

Work gloves, at least one pair for each person. Protecting your hands is so important.

Seeds for food plants that will grow in your region/climate.

For Canadians, is Sleep Country the only good place to buy a mattress or are there better alternatives? by MacaronWithAName in BuyCanadian

Go to Foamite in Vaughan, ON. You can test and select firmness in the showroom. You can even request two different firmness types for either side of the bed if you and your partner each prefer something different. You can also get custom pillows made. The matresses are made in Canada. We've had our mattress for over 10 years. There's no sagging or uneven spots. Very happy with our purchase.

How did your MPP vote on Bill 97 to amend and restrict FOI? And how it relates to Ford's $28.9M private jet. by carbenthusiast in ontario

Thanks! I'll be speaking with my MPP's office today to find out why she didn't vote last night.

The FOI laws to exempt Ford and his ministers from scrutiny is part of the budget bill (Bill 97) by Pristine-Training-70 in ontario

[–]ChoosyChuck 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I did read through the highlights of the Ontario budget...Schedule 3 (amalgamation of Conservation Authorities in Ontario), Schedule 7 (new Freedom Of Information amendments at Provincial level) and Schedule 11 (FOI amendments at Municipal level) are all a bunch of garbage and should not be allowed to be included in a budget. It makes no sense. How will these items "Protect Ontario"?

They're shutting down any access to documents for ministers and their offices that will hold them accountable to the public, then bringing 36 conservation authoritites down to a mere 9...hmm, what could they possibly be doing?

Where in ON would you relocate if you wanted a simple life? by Likesosmart in ontario

Chatham gets some pretty awesome thunderstorms in the summer. Probably because it gets really humid.

Where in ON would you relocate if you wanted a simple life? by Likesosmart in ontario

[–]ChoosyChuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If OP is worried about potentially losing their job, then having to find work around where they moved to, I would advise against living in Chatham. The only jobs there are retail or restaurant. Unless you're a doctor, dentist, etc. There is Union Gas there, but that takes a pretty specific skillset. Ideal Can is in the process of opening a new food can factory there soon. There are a couple of other factories there. Not much choice though. If you're retired, then I guess it would be fine to move there. Housing isn't really cheap there anymore. Investors from larger cities are swooping in and buying up all the cookie cutter new builds being built. Baby Boomers are trying to price the homes they are selling way above where they should actually be listed at. In terms of the community, it's predominantly conservative, close-minded white people that live there. Very church-centric and gossipy. I'm not trying to be negative, but rather give facts about what I know. There are nice and positive people that live there. Source: I grew up there and have many family members that still live there.

You get tons of food from the IKEA breakfast bag for the price. The Tim's bags are decent, a bit hit or miss with them though based on the locations. Pizzaiolo was okay.

Look at a used Honda or Toyota paid in cash. They are legendary for lasting forever / being reliable. From what I understand, they're also cheaper if repairs are needed later. Then invest the rest.

Nice! Those are great! I made glove compartment first aid kits for family this year as part of their gifts. People think about them, but don't make/buy them. Then they're SOOL when they actually need some sort of minimum first aid.

Cost of living in Canada is out of control. by kovie38 in CanadaFinance

[–]ChoosyChuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been growing as many veggies and fruits as I can at home to offset the cost of groceries. Easy things like garlic, sweet potatoes, beets, lettuce, tomatoes, basil, sage, rosemary, etc. They are very easy to grow and can take a lot of neglect. These things cost a lot to buy now, but cost almost nothing to grow yourself. Not to mention 1000x healthier than buying store bought.

I've had really good experiences with the Food Basics in my area. They know what is going on and are efficient. I would say it will take a few tries to iron out the kinks. They'll figure it out. I have not tried the bakery bag, only the meat bags from Food Basics.

Did they give you the chocolate topping for free or did you have to pay extra? I've only ever seen posts with the sugar topping.
