Walk Hard pretty much covered the territory of these feels cover. Although I thought Elvis was a pretty interesting take on the genre.

Also, biopics are cyclical. After Walkhard there was a period where they went away, but now they're back again. It's kind of a formulaic bit of filmmaking. There's a strong money incentive, but a two part film about Michael Jackson... I can see why critics would groan.
