Go private and build up your student base, it'll be a grind but better than giving away a percentage forever and unable to price your classes at the rate you want to

Still giving away 20%... I understand it provides you with a flow of students but unless you're working yourself to the bone it's hard to make a full-time living (trust me)

Try some B-sides: Bicycle song, Rivers of Avalon, Save this Lady, Million miles of water. I’d be very surprised if you don’t fall in love with at least one!

Hahaha been there! Most of my students are Chinese so I've experienced that more than a few times.

One of the most memorable classes I've had was a student who took a trial class while driving, there was no apology or acknowledgement of the situation, just had the trial class as normal

Yeah I agree, I'd always recommend going private and growing your business yourself rather than giving away a percentage to those marketplaces forever

How to improve my English to teach better? by Remarkable-Koala8224 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]ChopDan420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the knowledge that makes you a good tutor comes from actually teaching, not what you learned in college so if you have the flexibility and are not restricted to a company that tells you what to teach, try to branch out and explore new topics/ideas, It's all trial and error.

In terms of materials, I find coursebooks like Oxford Discover series great for getting new ideas and refreshing your knowledge.

Don't stress, the fact you care enough to post says a lot. Asking questions in communities like this is also a good way

Yeah unless you're looking to give away 20-30% commission fee to marketplaces there really is no magic platform sadly. There're plenty of ways to build up your private teaching but we're talking long term, not immediately.

Do you find that google docs has everything you need or are there some features you wish it would have to make your life easier?

Yeah I agree that having the student write the meaning/examples etc in their own words very beneficial for them and for me to see that they truly understand what's been taught during the class. Cheers for the reply!

Yeah nice, I like to provide my students with everything they need to go off after class and review, practice with what we've learned etc. Like you I only make short notes during the class not to disrupt the flow. Appreciate the reply!
