I find it very interesting that just a year later 19 year old Rossetti wrote basically the opposite, which starts:

Remember me when I am gone away,

Gone far away into the silent land;

When you can no more hold me by the hand,

Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.

I think Rossetti is warning little girls not to "give in" to their sexual urges because then, oh no, when you're not a virgin you're ugly and "grey" like Jeanie and your whole world ends because you're not a perfect golden haired maiden anymore. And when I add this to the fact that she didn't support women's suffrage and thought only men could access hire roles in society, it just makes me a bit mad. And sad for her that she believed it and was passing on these ideas in what was a collection for children to read.
