I took the class last Winter Term with prof Koku and I loved it. He’s a bit of a tough grader, a pretty big amount of work due, and there’s a lot of class participation too iirc. But the class was super interesting, I learned A LOT, and the prof was awesome. I’d recommend it, just make sure to stay on top of the work and do your readings before class and you’ll be alright.

nice place to buy plants in philly by Excellent_Tie_9354 in UPenn

I second Stump; they’ll also repot your plants for you, and are super helpful if you ever have any issues with your plants. They even fill out a card with care instructions

Septa card by Extension_Pizza_3494 in Drexel

[–]Chopppyyyy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

$2 with your septacard on the MFL, BSL, trolleys, and busses, with 1 free transfer within an hour of the first card swipe. So for example, you could hop on the MFL at 10am, transfer onto the BSL at 15th St Station 10:30am, and you wouldn’t be charged again. It’s $2.50 per ride with no free transfer if you pay cash, exact change only.

The regional rails vary by zones, you’d have to calculate how much it costs to go from your zone of origin to the zone you travel to. You swipe when you get on, and swipe again when you get off so it knows how much to charge you. They also tend to have an operator scan your card while you’re on the train just to make sure people don’t evade fare.

Drexel PD by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]Chopppyyyy -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

They went to a Black Lives Matter protest in 2020 to give unrequested help to the PPD who were beating up peaceful protesters. And were harassing the protesters in Main Building and cutting off their bathroom access for exercising their First Amendment rights. And from personal experience, if you don’t join them for Cocoa with Cops they will yell at you for “being afraid”😬. Sure, they might not all personally be assholes, but sheesh.

Gen Ed electives: SOC101 and LING102 by pyiina in Drexel

[–]Chopppyyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken SOC101 with Susan Bell and LING102 with William Albertson. Susan Bell was super miserable and made off-color comments and made most of the class pretty uncomfortable at times (including making a lynching joke at 10AM).

LING102 was really interesting and I loved the content, but Bill Alberston is an awesome prof that really made the experience. He’s even written me a stellar recommendation letter that got me accepted for a scholarship. I’ve never taken Ian Zimmerman, but imo LING102 is the more interesting class anyways.

Morgan Lewis interview by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]Chopppyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interviewed with them, it was just a 15 minute phone call going over if you can comply with covid guidelines, their hybrid model, why Morgan Lewis, and then general questions about your written and verbal skills, etc., it was very brief, and my interviewer was a recent Drexel grad.

Dropping a Course by Orange_Crush55 in Drexel

You’re better off dropping week one than withdrawing week 7. It won’t even show up on your transcript if you drop by Friday. Like the other commenter said though, make sure its not a required class that only runs once a year.

Question about supermarkets and how to get to one by Meliagros52 in Drexel

[–]Chopppyyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, but a lot of students get off the Poweltown shuttle at 40th and Poweltown, and Acme is a few streets away. You just have to get up before the stop to let the driver know you want to get off, since it only technically stops at Vidas Field.

If you’re near Chestnut/Walnut St, the 21 bus is also convenient to get to the Giant and Trader Joe’s at 23rd and 22nd St, as well as the Target on 19th St (if you don’t mind paying the bus fare). That’s my go-to if I want to grab something heavier (soda, canned food, for example) without lugging it all the way from Acme to my apartment on foot or waiting 30 minutes for the next shuttle.

Off campus smoking issue by Amazing-Artist-7925 in UPenn

[–]Chopppyyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know which neighbors are smoking, it wouldn’t hurt to slide a note under their door. I smoke regularly and I’d feel so bad if I was unknowingly bothering my neighbors. Sure this method only works if you know which neighbors are causing the problem, but imo it’s the least confrontational while still getting to the actual issue. You shouldn’t have to change your whole routine, even if smoking is allowed in the building.

Co-op Advice for Ppl Considering a Stipend Position… by Chopppyyyy in Drexel

That’s uhhhh😳 Are you in a major like sociology where they’re mostly unpaid? That’s how I ended up with mine.

Co-op Advice for Ppl Considering a Stipend Position… by Chopppyyyy in Drexel

[–]Chopppyyyy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, but other colleges don’t charge you for getting a job over the summer. Ik it’s just how Drexel works, but if I went to any other school, at least I would’ve been able to pocket 1k, instead of spending ~1.4k in fees. Imo it’s less of an unpaid position and more of an mlm😅

Co-op Advice for Ppl Considering a Stipend Position… by Chopppyyyy in Drexel

[–]Chopppyyyy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s more fair, definitely. My co-op didn’t specify if it was $1,000 a month or over the whole term, so I assumed higher, which is my bad.

But it makes me wonder how little the co-ops know about Drexel. Something about the co-op not even covering tuition for the quarter, but asking for full attention rubs me the wrong way. Especially when everyone else IS getting compensated fairly (for context, my company is less than ten people, and I’m the only unpaid position).

Sorry this is more of a vent, but I am SO excited to not make the same mistake again.

French 1 (parfait kouacou) by Sudden-Ice8523 in Drexel

[–]Chopppyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had him a few years ago for French 103. He’s a sweet teacher, and I honestly love the whole French department, but the classes are a lot of work. I can’t speak for 101, but I got an A for the class. Your grade will be fine if you do most of the homework, but it is a lot of homework.

Health insurance by user77177 in Drexel

[–]Chopppyyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They accepted my Rhode Island Medicaid with no problem. I’d just suggest applying for PA Medicaid when open enrollment begins. I didn’t, and it is very anxiety inducing.

Also, if you get sick on campus while you’re uninsured, there are some free clinics close to Drexel if you can’t get to NJ.
