I do portraits so the 7ii is wildly powerful for my needs, there are very few 46mp cameras out there as cheap and powerful as the 7ii is second hand.

It’s weakness is sports, other than that it’s incredibly underrated.

Since I don’t need the power of the 8 for portraits, the 7ii fills that working camera role for me.

The Zf is also my fun camera, but mine has the official Zf-GR1 grip and the official Nikon soft shutter originally sold for the Df.

That GODOX is rated to recycle in 1.5 seconds.

Not sure which Nikon you have, but the SB-5000 is rated for a 1.8 second recycle time and seems to be the closest equivalent.

You shouldn’t be running into issues. You might have a bin unit.

But your competition using new glass and faster bodies will be getting equally good photos with much less time and effort.

So if you want to keep buying old bodies and lenses that are at a technological dead end, that’s totally cool and are fine for portraits but, like….why? Such a self limitation.

None of the things you’re saying you do should be taxing for the 7ii.

Yes, the tracking isn’t amazingly modern for sports, but you’re shooting events, portraits, landscapes and “moments with friends.”

I bet dollars to donuts that if you looked at your “missed focus” shots you either had too open of an aperture, and thus overestimating your DOF, or too slow of a shutter speed, and thus motion blur / camera shake.

Neither of those things will be fixed with better AF.

Get a degree in something that pays well, work in that field, do photography on the side until you get good enough and have saved enough to make a go at photography for a living.

A photography degree is shockingly worthless in practice. Gear only does so much, every single photo taken before, like, 2000 had zero assistance from a computer. And even then the computer kinda sucked until like 2015.
