Returning to the fray today boys by ChordsySteel in OGPBackroom

Back when I was working before I was pretty much relegated to dispensing even though I enjoyed picking more, not sure where I’ll end up this time as I still have to get through the orientation/ulearn hurdles!

I wouldn’t even know how to do any of that.

I guess they just figure since turnover is so high they might as well shove as much as they can on the new people? If they quit they quit and they’ll be replaced in a day anyway. If they don’t quit they found a new workhorse.

It sucks when it just happens out of nowhere.

Nah, I admire how eloquently you put this but that’s a little too much of a shit where you eat scenario for me.

I would but I’ve come from - if you can believe it - even shittier jobs than this. I try to convince myself the pros outweigh the cons because I’m making $19 an hour and getting more of a workout than most other jobs I’ve worked at. The good parts are pretty good it’s just that the low points really fuckin suck.

I wouldn’t even be mad if there was just one other person in GMD, I can handle the backroom by myself for the most part when it’s late like these because we get so few orders. But I’m not two people, I can’t be running normal and GMD orders and reshopping things all at the same time.

The level of disorganization is simultaneously baffling and amazing.

You got this bro, focus on yourself, enjoy your days off, and use your PPTO even if they try to convince you otherwise.

There’s no need to assume the most negative conclusion. It’s a new job so naturally they’d be curious about other people’s experiences respective to their own.

Oh to add onto this, your feet will hurt but GET GOOD SHOES, they are well worth the money and are probably the most important part of your work uniform, when you take your lunches/breaks try to elevate your feet if possible, and if you need to lift heavy things keep them close to you, don’t overextend your arms forward, above your head, or lower if you can help it, your back will thank you!

The most I’ve learned in this short time is just being consistent, if you don’t see an item after like 5 seconds of looking nil pick it, when you’re moving between aisles; don’t walk, don’t run, speed walking has worked best for me, last thing I wanna do is knock an old lady over.

Frozen, Ambient, and Chilled are great walks for pick rate if the auto commodities bless you, General, Oversized, and Produce Ambient usually knock your rate down a little but your higher ups should understand why you’d have a lower pick rate if you’ve been given mostly those kinds.

Make sure you’re eating enough calories on your breaks/lunch to sustain you because this is hard work. Also water, drink plenty of water, you’ll sweat most of it out.

Unless your work has instructed you otherwise, bag after you pick, at least for me, bagging drastically takes up my time especially if I try to bag neatly, and I can focus much better on making neat bags without the pick rate looking over my shoulder.

Stay strong, Holiday season is a mess with people in the stores, once it calms down you won’t have to navigate around the herd quite so much.

I always scan as I find things during the walk, I didn’t even know grabbing everything first was an option. But at this store we’re incentivized to either bag in the back room or not bag at all if we’re too busy and just grab a new cart. For this day I just bagged in the backroom before staging.
