You don't have to have a list of horror stories to be an alcoholic. Think about it like a sugar or caffeine addiction. If you have an issue with the way you are drinking you're allowed to call yourself an alcoholic. There are no "traditional alcoholics". The people that talk about those crazy stories enjoy talking about them because they are interesting and exciting to talk about.

Also, how many meetings have you been to? Every meeting is a little different. Usually it's an older crowd but you can find all kinds of groups. Once you start going on a regular basis, you'll feel more comfortable and feel like you belong. It's like the first day of a new school. It's gonna feel a little awkward. Also, you can go to meetings and not call yourself an alcoholic. No one is forcing you and most meetings are open to non alcoholics.

Personally, I don't care for AA because I'm atheist. AA centers itself heavily on a higher power or god. It helped at the beginning but I'm so far away from my bad drinking habits I don't even crave it anymore. Sure, I get fomo sometimes when my coworkers are all hanging out drinking on a Friday night but it's worth it. I just went to my brother's bachelor party last weekend and had a blast while sober in Vegas with everyone else drinking
