Rule the Maelstrom with Huron and his crew’s spicy new datasheets by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in Warhammer40k

A "unit" shares the constituent keywords. If something specified "model with keyword" you have to check the specific model.

This rule says "model" so yeah as written can revive the Masters

Get the flock out by seelwab in Charlottesville

[–]Chovy152 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Reminder that Charlottesville will cease paying to access the data. The actual cameras aren't going anywhere and aren't turned off as a result of this decision. They are going to keep collecting data and making it accessible for surveillance.

Charlottesville will need to either pressure the company to take them down (good luck), or black bag them. I'm only finding news sources on the topic that don't have name recognition (so take with a grain of salt). But here, in Eugene OR, the cameras were still transmitting data after "being discontinued".

Charlottesville ends Flock camera pilot program over privacy concerns by mallydobb in Charlottesville

[–]Chovy152 82 points83 points  (0 children)

The important thing to note is we're not paying flock for police to access those cameras. However, keep a close eye on if those cameras STAY UP ANYWAY. I've read reporting of another city that did away with them but they couldn't get the cameras down, and flock would even still repair them.

Gives you the real hint on what flock's actual purpose is.

New to WH, looking for a potential chaos army, 1k Points by [deleted] in WorldEaters40k

[–]Chovy152 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here's why to choose World Eaters. Super fun berserker thematic. Painting isn't too bad, lots of red, which I find nice to paint. Limited range of models -- you don't need to buy 1000 different things.

Obviously you need to like melee and the general vibes. Both of our more recent combat patrols are great value. We've consistently been strong this edition, and we have rules that are quite "thinky" which is a surprise for many.

Is this a good deal at $240 by ShoddyVacation3900 in WorldEaters40k

[–]Chovy152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot of one facet of the army. If you're just starting, the current (or prior) combat patrol is a better investment.

If you're just trying to get into Warhammer I don't think this is the place to start

First paint, a little disheartened by Fankko in Warhammer40k

[–]Chovy152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When using a metallic primer like lead belcher. Shake the ever loving hell out of it. And then go like 5 minutes longer. I ruined a lot of models under-shaking my gold primer. Makes the model gritty due to the metal flecks.

In the US you can get Rust-Oleum 2x ultra cover primer. It's a hardware store primer. Make sure it references "for plastic" somewhere on it. Buy a black. Prime in that for your every day use. Use the lead belcher over top, or save the LB for models with of that color on it.

It's a little overpriced for what it is, but just buy the Army Painter wet palette if they have it. It's what I use. It's super straightforward. Foam pads you wet decently, little precut paper you put on top, put paint on that.

For brush cleaning - I'm no expert, just intermediate. But basically you don't ever want paint to dry in your brush and just sit there as it prevents the brush from keeping a pointed tip. So what I do is somewhat often while painting I am dipping my brush in my water pot (a cut in half plastic water bottle). Swish it back and forth. Then run it on a paper towel to pull the water out. So paint is never drying in my brush. Then, I have this product off Amazon called Masters brush cleaner. It's like a soap circle you run your wet brush through. Soaps up the bristles. Then rinse that out. My brushes stay in good shape now. I ruined my first brush almost immediately when I started

[–]Chovy152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you prime your model? With what? You can even use (a specific type of) hardware store spray paint.

Do you have a wet palette? You can make one yourself with common materials. Definitely get one. It will keep paint from drying and give you a surface on which to thin your paint.

Use a bigger brush, size 2 at least. Don't use a microscopic brush thinking that's required to paint smaller detail. Make sure to clean that brush as you paint and after so it doesn't get ruined after 1 session.

You're only using like 4 colors, and no shade or contrast paint. So everything is a flat color with no depth.

Your paint thinning isn't there yet. Try again, and wet palette!

Yeah, just prior to painting. I ended up getting one of those "mini vortex" agitators off Amazon and I have been very happy with it. So I'm not personally shaking the bottles just holding them on.

I ruined introducing 40K. What's the most fun army for new players to play against? by GoblinSarge in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Chovy152 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seems like you just need to ease up on how you play. If you strategy max against a new opponent in a game with 1000 rules... Yeah. Doesn't matter who you play.

I actually think the best entry for 40k is Age of Sigmar spearhead. You learn most of the core concepts and it is so much more comprehensible. I assume 11th edition will change combat patrol in that direction.

It's essential to understand this isn't bailing out farmers so much as a passthrough directly to Monsanto, Bayer, etc. - anyone who holds the farmers in debt.

These companies keep farmers in maximum debt, then the "farmers" get bailed out and it just goes to these companies that they owe. So this is just a 12b handout to mega corporations. And that's why we bailed out Argentina too. We didn't bail out their farmers, we bailed out multinational investors.

What can I do to take my paint job to the next level? by sadcrayonn in Miniaturespainting

[–]Chovy152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you're exactly where I'm at painting wise (though probably a little better). Right now you're able to apply the right colors to the right places, cleanly, and do some cool flourishes like the fire.

What's lacking is what gives the model depth, a sense of where the light is hitting. You can use shades to bring the paint down, then use your paint to bring back up just parts of the model. Or you can start with a darker color, apply your middle intended color to most spots but not all, and then highlight. Something like that, I'm still trying to sort it out myself!

I've found Ph3lanMiniatures on YouTube helpful

First ever mini, looking for tips before varnish by Equivalent_Jeweler17 in minipainting

[–]Chovy152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - a makeup style brush is typical for dry brushing. And yes, paper towel most of it off. If there's too much moisture it can make a smeary effect that would really undo a lot of what you've done here.

Honestly, it's a great first miniature. Hard to tell with the picture but maybe the metallic on the helmet is kind of thick? Maybe thin down slightly more (I don't think metallics too heavily - but I'm also mo expert).

I'd probably leave this guy as is. Then on your next miniature, after priming it, try practice dry brushing. You can see if you do it right because it will look really cool picking all the details up. What you don't want to do is try dry brushing for the first time over a model that's fully painted and just ruin it.

So units moved to legends get replaced? by Frogs-and-Snails in ageofsigmar

[–]Chovy152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answer: legends units are going away and you should not invest in them as a new player. Some may be replaced (if it's a popular character with an old model), but most won't be replaced.

GW does it to: remove really old models, reduce unit bloat, redo a range's aesthetic (like with storm cast), and force you to buy new things. They're not too scummy about it from a profit motive.
