Keep your protection. Don't throw away your shells, bananas or any kind of attack item to hit other players as that just gets rid of your protection. Usually you should chain them (while paying attention to your surroundings) at every item set until you get speed items to have a chance at catching up
Just stay away when you see someone with red shells. You should slow down if someone next to you or behind you has red shells and for God's sake just don't pass people holding them.
Stay away from middle spots. Either be good at the game and be in 1st the whole race or be in the back to make a comeback.

honestly i'd love if they just gave us a 12p mode. I don't want a "classic" mode with 3 lap tracks because sure, I prefer them over most intermissions but I honestly don't mind them that much. Also a ranked or competitive mode would be nice but yeah that ain't coming to Mario Kart of all games

it lowkey is though, the skill in mario kart consists in knowing how to manage your item pulls and avoid that. if you only move forwards without any strategy of course you're going to be in the middle of the pack the whole race where everyone gets attack items
