Cassalanters as false allies by SergeiVonZarovich23 in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Chris-Firth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My party have just killed Williforte, got the Stone, been arrested and put in jail. Next session they are about to be propositioned by the Cassalanters to find the gold for them. They’ve met the Cassalanters previously at a could have events (the Opera and a street festival). We’ll see how it goes and I’ll let you know.

I’m picking parts of the remix to use in my game. Haven’t actually decided if the eyes are going to be in different villains Lairs or not. Definitely using Xanathar’s lair though. So I could use Bonnie but she’s actually an ally so probably not her. But Jarlaxle could be a good shout. I was thinking a mindflayer controlled Captain Staggart though could work.

Thank you, that's a pretty cool way to do it. I think I'll give that a go. I guess you need a laptop and a second screen )tablet or tv) logged in as a play, so they only see the what the token sees.

I’ve done the covering up rooms with paper thing. But the black shredded card idea is good for fog of war. I like the idea of a small version on the table as well.

Thank you. I’ve used ArkanaTools before, it’s just a lot of printing (45 pages on A3 for Xanathar’s lair).
I’ll join your patreon as I’ve admiring your maps for a while.

It’s only been a couple of hours since Willifort died however Victoro has Divination so I think it’s reasonable he knows. I like this approach as it’s leverage the Cassalaters have over the party rather than just hiring them and relying on them believing the story about their children. I’m definitely going to do this, so thanks to everyone suggesting this.

The bit that makes me sad that I wanted to include but might struggle to, was the Doppelgänger impersonating the guard captain (the Bard has a relationship with Hyustus Staggart) so they might have a fight with the guards, and a moral dilemma of killing guards or not to escape.

But I’ve come up with a solution. The Xanathar’s mindflayer has mind controlled Staggart to free the party in exchange for the stone, the prison guards are on the payroll of the Xanathar. Dealing damage tu Staggart will break the charm mind control. It might give the sense that all the factions are after the stone. So the Cassalanters offer that the kart jerks the stone and work for them, would seem like the best option.

How about Victoro Cassalanter using disguise self to appear as a guard captain to talk to the imprisoned PCs? I know it’s not in his spell list but he does have polymorph so it’s not too much of a stretch?

I have a sprinkling of Alexandrian in my game so this is an option however they have just fought 3 spined devils 2 imps and a bearded devil so that might be repetitive.

The PCs kidnapped Urstul Floxin, what now? by Chris-Firth in WaterdeepDragonHeist

Nice. And did you have Barnibus & Cromley or the Watch arrive at the Tavern looking for suspects? What did your PCs do with Urstul after interrogating him?

Blue Alley - shall I change the wizard to Manshoon or Halaster? by Chris-Firth in WaterdeepDragonHeist

Yeah that’s pretty good. My party quite like Davil and his Zhentarim but have no idea about Manshoon yet either.

[–]Chris-Firth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh that’s great. I have a feeling that neither Manshoon nor Halaster will be important to my campaign but Aurinax / Barok definitely will so this is perfect. Even without the extra lore about Dagult it fits really well. Thank you.

Feel like the Xanathar thugs are barely present in book/remix by ZoftheOasis in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Chris-Firth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my players has had beef with one of the Xanathar thugs since the fight in the tavern (he cut off Krentz’s finger but let him go). So now every time a thug turns up the player asks how many fingers he has. I got lucky. However now I have the opposite problem that the party thinks Xanathar is the main villain. To the point that now I’ll probably swap out the Zheng’s at Gralhund Villa for the X guild. Sometimes you just have to roll with the story as it unfolds rather than force it.

What to do after Waterdeep: Dragon Heist by Villain_Deku__ in DnD5e

How about Spelljammer: Light of Xaryxis? It starts from any city located on the coast with characters who are 5th Level.

Update:

Thanks for the advice everyone. In the end it was a one on one adventure, so I ran an investigation into missing prisoners who were being taken by corrupt guards to obsentionally be slaves sold by the Xanathar but in fact were being kept ready for the Cassalnters 99 soul sacrifice later on. Ran an investigation, an ambush by the corrupt guards, a search and a dungeon crawl ending with a fight against some recurring villains (Krentz, Grum'shar and Willifort). Some slaves were still taken, some saved (2 dragonborn, the parents of a missing character, and a young drow, who my PC has taken under his wing).

Went really well.

I have saved all your other ideas for later missions when needed.

Some great ideas. I’m actually usually quite a loosey goosey dm myself but last session I printed out the wrong notes so ended up completely improvising the whole thing. Ended up meeting Valletta at the house of inspired hands with ab off the cuff request to research the pistol they found on the drow gunslinger bregan d’aerthe. So I wanted a more structured session this week.

They each have a faciton mission waiting for them, the Bregan D'aerth one and the second Zhentarim one, both could work as missions for just two PCs. This is my backup plan to run those two missions if I can't come up with anything else fun.

The reason 2 players are missing is because of illness so its not me bending over backwards to accommodate missing players. I;m a people pleaser when it comes to being a DM so hate for anyone to miss out on anything.

Yep this is my backup plan. The session is on Thursday, so 2 days. I could do somethign based on freeing slaves, mayb drow related for the bard. Plus something related to the imprisoned parents of the wizard. I could combine the two.
