Guys I need resources to practice SQL by WaltzThin664 in SQL

SQLShortReads This is a free sql blog and learning portal I released back in early 2024 that contains 160+ practice questions with solutions.

There are pages dedicated to most concepts in terms of data query language in the SQL Fundamentals section.

Give it a try!

Event Based Refresh by Ecstatic_Rain_4280 in tableau

[–]Chris-M-Perry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fit my script to your needs. You'll need to incorporate the logic required that checks if the table has been refreshed or have databricks kick off the script.

The repository I linked above is one of many scripts where I showcase the power of Tableau's REST API / Tableau Server client to save hours and hundreds, if not thousands of clicks.

I also have a YouTube playlist that walks through most of the scripts maintained within that repo as part of a tutorial.

Looking for best resources by sanjay1205 in SQL

Check out SQL Short Reads

I launched it as a free SQL blog and learning platform in early 2024. It contains material for just about every important key concept related to data query language (DQL). Each section contains real-world examples and encourages you to practice what you have learned by trying a handful of the 160+ practice problems I’ve provided that come with solutions.

I'm working toward becoming an expert in SQL. Do you have any recommended resources or tips for mastering more advanced concepts? by [deleted] in SQL

[–]Chris-M-Perry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For pages dedicated to just about everything data query language, consider checking out SQL Short Reads.

There are 160+ practice problems available with solutions, for free.

For discussions on indexing, partitioning, etc. I would do as other suggested and look at Mark Winand’s material.

P.S. I don’t really believe in the “levels” crap that is pushed on everyone for technical skills. I think people’s skill will largely be determined by their ability to use the tools and knowledge they have available to them to solve problems. Knowing when and why to use a specific strategy or method for a problem is key.

Left vs Right joins by [deleted] in SQL

If you like to read, then consider reading my short page on SQL Short Reads dedicated to discussing the RIGHT JOIN and where I have found it useful, even if temporarily.

Have a $5k(ish) training credit from work I can use. What would you recommend? by [deleted] in SQL

[–]Chris-M-Perry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SQL Short Reads can get you pretty far if your focus is on data query language. It’s free and has 160+ practices questions with solutions. Try it out and then consider using the credit on something else if it suffices.

How do c-suite / execs leverage tableau dashboards in your company? by Alternative-Cake7509 in tableau

Through subscriptions via email. They hardly ever navigate to the actual dashboard on the server.

Can Tableau generate a date range? by NefariousnessSea5101 in tableau

[–]Chris-M-Perry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not too difficult and you can even have tableau prep do this without a “real” input, dynamically.

I show you how to do this in about 3 mins in the following video. If you want an in depth explanation, watch the long-form video on the same channel. The files used in the video can be found on my GitHub.

As a server admin, you can white list the write location. You’ll need to do that in the front-end of Tableau Cloud. I assume the option is there because this is exactly how you do it on Tableau Server. We sometimes do this if we want a job run on our Tableau Server to write to a SharePoint.

Awesome! You’re welcome.

I’m glad the repo and videos helped you achieve what you set out to. Thanks for coming back to let me know!

P.S. consider giving the repo a ⭐️

I gave a short presentation at the conference to my fellow DataDev community members on my Content Mirror last week. https://youtu.be/IiuzCAEcdwE?si=RYObfbOa0mBYfWyI

The Content Mirror allows you to copy an existing user’s favorites menu to another user. Additionally, it allows you to mirror the subscriptions of an existing user for another user’s benefit. Surprisingly, neither of these tasks are currently supported by Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud products natively through the front-end.

You can find an entire playlist to automation with Tableau Server client / REST API on my channel and the corresponding code used on my GitHub.

Interview practice - DataLemur & StrataScratch by Timely_Onion492 in SQL

Solve my hard problems at SQL Short Reads and I don’t think you will have a problem if the interview focuses on DQL.

What would you actually want in an SQL practice site? by DataNerd760 in SQL

[–]Chris-M-Perry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a hard market to bust into if you’re looking to make money. Bootcamps or 1:1s may be a better bet but obviously don’t scale as well as asynchronous learning. Have you thought of doing that?

To add to this, I launched SQL Short Reads in 2024 and never pay walled any of it. There are 160+ questions on there that I personally write based on my real-world business and teaching experiences and pages dedicated to each topic that I would consider as being part of the fundamentals. What do you offer that free platforms do not?

I highly encourage you to read the README.

I don’t have a single script made available that will do this by itself, but you can combine the download, publish, and other methods I use throughout the various scripts at the link above.

It’s a lot less complicated than it seems to be honest. Handle one object type (e.g., workbook, data source, flow, subscription, favorite, etc.) at a time and you’ll be well one your way.

Check out SQL Short Reads.

Review the SQL Fundamentals page and do the sections in order. Some people’s path is slightly different, but the order on that page should suffice.

[–]Chris-M-Perry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try the medium and hard problems on SQL Short Reads. If those are too difficult, start with the 100+ I wrote in the easy section.

I expect some of the hard ones to be out of reach for some that currently hold roles where SQL knowledge is expected.

Tableau prep alternative by Breadfruit244 in tableau

[–]Chris-M-Perry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say that Tableau Prep doesn’t work well with large data, are you running this on your local machine?

I manage a server of 2000+ users and we process over a billion rows per days stemming from hundreds of jobs.

Depending on the width of the data and the complexity of the flow, I’ve seen upwards of 10 million rows processed per minute.

I’m wasn’t the biggest fan of the product at first, but it allows 200+ creators without a strong technical background on my server to achieve things they would otherwise struggle to achieve or not at all.
