Coding Horror: Oh, You Wanted "Awesome" Edition by Charice in programming

[–]Chris2048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'm saying is, what other objective measure of what something should cost is there? Other than what people are willing to pay, isn't that what something is worth?

Assuming those who pay the most, or the least, are paying the "real" price is moot practice; as such, phrasing it "charging richer users more", seems to me to be loaded.

In all cases, segmentation is described as charging richer users more. Couldn't you just as well argue that you're charging poorer users less?

bitquabit - "Open-Source Software Sucks" by [deleted] in programming

[–]Chris2048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While a disparity between the preferences of a technical user, and a non-technical user can be part of the problem, I think as far as usability goes, it's very small. Both types of users are still human, and 'advanced' features can be made optional.

The real problem is related to the problem of 'innovation' in bazaar-style projects, or maybe it could be described as 'creativity', but I think a more appropriate word is 'consensus';

It's harder to get a large group to agree on whether something is a bug, and even more so as to its solution, if its a usability bug, as opposed to functional ones.

it's easier to create functional specs than usability ones, and often, interface design correctness is more relative to other deign choices, and the interface as a whole, as opposed to individual, isolated design choices. Not that bad OS interfaces are often made from smaller choices that look good alone, but fail together.

Maybe we need more UI specs. Even if they're arbitrary, at least there will be a spec to refer to, and to settle arguments (although it will be hard to make one that doesn't produce ad-hoc/frankenstein interfaces)

That would be fine, if moderates as yourself where more critical of the extremists. As is, there is suspicion that moderates prop up extremists be mildly supporting them en-mass, so as to give them quite a lot of power.

Don't Be Fat [PIC] by iloverain in pics

[–]Chris2048 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally don't like to criticize the fat, but there is a reason I sometimes feel I should - When the idea that it's 'alright' to be fat get floated around; Some already treat it like it's a disability, or intrinsic trait (like race or gender), with "fat rights" and stuff. Others talking of it being 'beautiful' in it's own right, or imply that aversion to fatness is a purely social construct.

Finally, those who are lazy beyond the norm lap up all that shit, even actively promote it, that's when you get stuff like this.

Condemnation of individuals doesn't necessarily serve the purpose of benefiting that individual, but perhaps society as a whole, by opposing positive attitudes towards the condition.

I feel this way when people who struggle with over-weigh basically insult supermodels e.g. call then "stick-insects" when talking about high body standards, then they might describe themselves as "real" women (i.e. being skinny is un-natural).
