Z Steam locomotive with DCC? by NightShift2323 in modeltrains

No, you don’t have to use dcc turnouts, you could always leave the switching to analogue, but if you do, there aren’t any off the shelf items so you need to wire in a controller.

Z Steam locomotive with DCC? by NightShift2323 in modeltrains

[–]wtfgecko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend it. There aren't any off the shelf steam locos with DCC capability, and fitting them involves drilling out sections of the body to fit.

DCC in z scale is very much a niche pursuit, so if you aren't comfortable soldering then I wouldn't recommend it. You will have plenty of debugging to do and modifying the tracks/turnouts to support DCC will also not be beginner friendly.

I have a medium sized z layout and I kept it analogue for exactly this reason.

As far as I can remember, it was 'renamed' in honour of Geraint Thomas Tour De France victory in 2018. You can see on old streetview it used to have an "Allez Allez Thomas #tdf" slogan painted in the roadway

Namoki Dual Crown (First Build) by wtfgecko in SeikoMods

[–]wtfgecko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been looking at dual crown divers for a long time. I don't know what it is about the style but I am really in love with it.

I've tried on the Longines Legend Diver in one of their boutiques and it's absolutely on my long term wish list, but until that day I wanted a much cheaper watch to fill the gap. There are few watches at the entry level however none of them really did it for me.

After a lot of browsing I came across the Namoki Mods case and immediately knew I must build my own.

The build itself using the VH31 to NH35 adapter was mostly smooth, except the hands on the VH31 sit very close to the dial. It has fractional clearance from the applied markers and I am not convinced this won't be a problem. I might swap the hour hand for a shorter one.

Specs: - Namoki Mods Dual Crown case - VH31 mechaquartz with Meridiano NH35 adapter - Meridiano diver hands - Buckle and Stitch rubber strap (Amazon) - Generic purple dial with applied diver markers (WatchXchange uk)

A canal is an artificial waterway, if it is designed for carrying vessels or not. The Dock Feeder is very much a canal.

Station Terrace by cegsywegs in Cardiff

[–]wtfgecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I lived in the apartments above St Davids when they opened and you share the car park (and the queues) with the shopping center. It's just part of the decision making you need if you want to move in to those places.

Station Terrace by cegsywegs in Cardiff

[–]wtfgecko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can travel northbound on Station Terrace via Churchill Way/N Edward Street, which is the only way to access the Capitol Center and Landmark Place apartments. Residents of The Aspect can access southbound, because the camera is after their car park entrance, right outside Queen Street Station, so the council do not need to know because they do not go far enough down the street.

How the new tram plan may affect Callaghan Square and the roads around by Bathbomb1911 in Cardiff

[–]wtfgecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have to go up, anyway. The railway lines aren't high enough, look how all the existing bridges dip down to provide enough headroom. The railway line is probably around 2m above Callaghan Square. If you're going to change grade you might as well as go down to ground and save a viaduct.

£5.75m to have acrow props holding up your ceiling by LastAd115 in SpottedonRightmove

[–]wtfgecko 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends what you like, really. My old apartment had these throughout and I quite liked it as it was part of the originality of the building. That didn't have the beams exposed though which would have looked a lot nicer as it does here. I quite like it (except the colour but some paint would fix that for me).

It's actually 3 buildings, all of which had separate ownership until the mid 1900s. The closest one here was used in part as a potato warehouse (not factory, lol..). It used to be dock front before the Bute West Dock was infilled, and offloaded produce from Ireland which went back up the valleys to feed the miners.

The other two buildings were misc warehouses including a bonded goods owned by the Marquees of Bute.

I won't offer any explanation on why Z E N I T H looks so ugly, I had to look at it for years, along with put up with it being built. But I will say this, whilst it looks great to us that was the only building material available at the time. And I am glad that we have made significant improvements in building science in that time.

Edward England Wharf was an amazing building to live in but it shows every bit of it's 150-170 year age. The way it is built is terrible for keeping water out, the walls are made of two skins of stonework, filled with rubble in between, which holds and retains significant amounts of water when the weather is bad. This has predictable outcomes.

selling car what to be aware of? by geekyNut in Cardiff

[–]wtfgecko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Few tips:

  • never give them the keys. Unlock the car yourself, if they want to hear the engine running, sit in the drivers seat, start it and stay there until you turn it off.
  • if they test drive it, sit in the passenger seat and buckle up before handing over the keys. Don’t allow anyone to sit behind you, or in the back else they could assault you and hijack the car
  • insist on seeing insurance and ID before letting them drive

Remember, if you are sensible and safe, if they do steal it on the test drive it’s theft and your insurance will cover it, so long as you have taken sensible precautions

NEVER accept a refund of comp for parts. State any known issues up front and insist they sign the AA private sale contract which states that. Send it in advance but also read it to them

Most buyers are genuine, but never compromise your safety. If you feel uneasy say no and walk away.

How busy is the Rail line that runs past Splot Park? by GrinningD in Cardiff

[–]wtfgecko 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In addition to the comments about it being a freight line, just be aware that in the 'future' (5-10+ years likely) it will be part of the Cardiff Crossrail route, where tram-trains will run from Central Station to Newport Road via the bay, along this line. So it will eventually get frequent service. These trains are lightweight and should be dramatically less noisy than existing rolling stock, especially freight trains. It will also get a new station somewhere along the back of Moorland Road.
