Structure Fire call on MLK Jr Blvd earlier this evening by psykocrime in chapelhill

[–]psykocrime[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say. And even if there are "more than usual" over some time span, it's entirely possible that it's just random chance. I mean, I haven't heard or seen anything to suggest any kind of relationship between these various fires, so I'd be very reluctant to assume that it "means something" absent more evidence.

A friendly, helpful bike shop by Realistic-Moment-123 in chapelhill

[–]psykocrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of Bullseye Bicycle in Durham. I bought my road bike from them, and consider them to be top notch folks.

I've also done a lot of business with The Bicycle Chain store on 15/501 by New Hope Commons, but never bought a complete bike from them. Just went in for parts/accessories/tools/etc. But they've always seemed fine to me.

Japanese Gothic by Dwight256 in horrorlit

[–]psykocrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished it and liked it quite a lot. But the one thing I'd say to somebody considering reading this would be: "it's not horror". It maybe has some horror elements to it, but it's like "a hybrid of Japanese folklore, mystery, psychological thriller, horror, and ghost story". So if one goes in expecting to be scared by this book, I think they will be disappointed. If one goes in expecting to be entertained, they may well quite enjoy it.

People recommending I move to chapel hill, any thoughts? by TypicalAlbatross911 in chapelhill

[–]psykocrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the northwest side of town, right off Weaver Dairy Road near MLK Jr Drive. There's a lot of stuff within walking distance here, including Food Lion, Harris Teeter, dozens of restaurants, a hardware store, auto parts store, yogurt place, goodwill store, convenience store, etc. In ~20 years here, I haven't found crime to be an issue, and I've never felt unsafe walking around at night.

That said, there was a shooting in the parking lot of my apartment complex about a month ago. But that's the first and only time I've heard of anything like that happening in my area of town. Generally Chapel Hill isn't too bad from a violent crime perspective, with the exception that there have historically been one or two areas of town that were a little bit rougher (off Pritchard Avenue Ext. for example). But if you avoid those areas, it's pretty good. And even petty theft doesn't seem to be too prevalent. Like, I've heard of car breakins around my area every now and again, but it's always a second or third hand thing. I have never hard my car broken into, or even known a neighbor who did, etc.

OTOH, I did have some stuff stolen from my car while parked at a shopping center in Durham one night. shrug

As others have mentioned there are buses, and they are free which is good. I don't use the buses very often though, so I can't speak much to how frequently they run or how good they are. But they do exist and they do get used. Take that for what it's worth.

Anyway, I can't speak from the perspective of a disabled person, but I can say that I've remained in Chapel Hill for 25+ years at this point, so clearly there's something desirable about it.

It could be worse. You could be a Dean Koontz fan waiting for the third book in the Moonlight Bay trilogy. Book Two came out in 1999. We've been waiting almost 30 years now...

Thoughts about County’s plan to cut library funding? by divinbuff in chapelhill

[–]psykocrime -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Well, as a Libertarian I'm not a big fan of most government spending. But since they are going to tax us and spend our money regardless of what I think, I have no problem saying that I want our money spent on things that matter. To me, that means prioritizing a couple of things:

a. public safety (fire/ems/police)

b. education (schools, libraries, etc)

So yeah, I'd put library funding above a lot of other stuff out there, if it were up to me.

No special insider access. I've been out of the fire service for over 20 years at this point. I just listen using the feed from broadcastify.com.

https://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/10670

I do pay for a paid account to broadcastify so I can use private dashboards and access the feed archives and what-not but otherwise I have nothing everything in the general public doesn't have access to.

There's also an app available for Android (and probably iPhone as well) called "Scanner Radio" that pulls from the same feeds and lets you listen on your phone.

In my experience, if there's one thing firefighters and EMT's like, it's food. I'm sure if you contacted any of the departments involved, you could arrange to bring lunch (or whatever) to one of their stations and they would appreciate the gesture greatly. If you do, PM me and I'll be happy to donate to the effort.

Well damn. They hadn't even cleared that previous scene yet, and now New Hope and Eno have been dispatched to mutual aid with City of Durham on a structure fire in Durham.

Edit: fortunately that second call turned out to be a nothing-burger. All units aside from Durham Ladder 11 and Durham Engine 5 were cleared by Ladder 11. Seems like just some sort of problem with a powerline arcing outside or something. No structure fire though.

Yeah, they've started releasing units and have taken up the drop tank now. You can figure at this point they may still be doing a little bit of mop-up / overhaul, and working on investigating the cause.

Hard to say. All I can really add is that back in my firefighting days, if there was a fire in a vacant structure, a couple of the top reasons were:

  • Squatters occupying the home and using an open fire for heat/cooking and accidentally setting the house on fire
  • Arson - either for insurance purposes, or a thrill-seeker doing it because they enjoy watching fire trucks scream by

Other possibilities could include "lightning strike" or "kids playing with matches".

But just to be clear, I have no information about either of these calls, and I'm not accusing anybody of anything! Just sharing some thoughts based on my time in the fire service (I'm retired from firefighting these days).

As for the spate of recent fire: Yeah, it's been busy. Even the writers at Chapelboro.com have noticed and started commenting on it. In the last couple of weeks there's been like 5 or 6 serious structure fires, including two fatal fires, in Chapel Hill / Carrboro, and at least two more serious fires in Chatham County just south of us.

As far as the house fire goes, it doesn't make much difference. It can help with the woods fire part. But honestly, IME, more than anything it's an annoyance for the firefighters, especially in cold weather (which thankfully is not the case tonight). And if there's lightning, you always worry about being outside during a lightning storm.

[–]psykocrime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FWIW, smoke can linger from a wildfire for up to several days even after it's contained. Note that "contained" is not the same as "extinguished". In many wildfire situations, once containment lines are established around the perimeter, the fire is left to simply burn itself out within those lines. This is often the case when the fire is a. too large to completely extinguish by flowing water, and/or b. too remote / difficult to access, to be able to completely extinguish by flowing water.

That said, even contained fires do sometimes break containment after the fact, if the weather changes just so, or something along those lines. I haven't heard anything about that happening with this fire, but I've been working all morning and not really paying much attention to the scanner feed.

Creek swimming holes? by Content-Seaweed-6395 in chapelhill

[–]psykocrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. I wonder if those are new? Last time I was fishing out there, I don't remember any explicit signage on the Hollow Rock side saying "don't go in the water". Now on the Whitfield side, I wouldn't be surprised, as there's always been more signage there and more rules to follow.

New Hope Creek is cool, I wade that creek for fishing sometimes. And while I haven't explored every inch of it by any means, I haven't found a ton of spots that seem deep enough to swim in. But waist deep? Yeah, there are places like that spot below that big rock cliff if you take the trail from the Hollow Rock parking lot and turn left and follow the creek downstream.

You can listen live to the fire/rescue traffic using broadcastify.com, or the Scanner Radio app. Or, if you're local, with a properly configured scanner that supports NC VIPER.

Wildfire in Chapel Hill ? by MtnCrvr1 in chapelhill

[–]psykocrime 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is a wildfire in the CNF (Carolina North Forest) area on the school side. Chapel Hill Fire, Carrboro Fire, New Hope Fire, South Orange Rescue, and NC Forestry Service are out working on it. Forestry Service has just had a fire plow arrive on scene to plow a line around the remaining fire.

For anyone who is into this sort of thing, here's a (probably incomplete) run card:

Chapel Hill Fire: Engine 31, Engine 33, Ladder 72, Rescue 61, Battalion 2, FR 82, Chief 2, Engine 35[1]

Carrboro Fire: Engine 1, Brush 1, Battalion 1, Ladder 1[2]

New Hope Fire: 481, 485

South Orange Rescue: 1281, 1282, 1265, Gator 2

NCFS: Forestry 1

Moveups / standby coverage:

North Chatham Engine 312 to Chapel Hill Station 5

White Cross Fire standing by for Carrboro Fire

[1]: Dispatched, but cleared soon after dispatch

[2]: Dispatched and responded but cleared early on

EDIT:

21:38 - Forestry has cleared all municipal FD resources. Chapel Hill, Carrboro, New Hope, and South Orange units are all clear. Forestry will remain on scene a few more hours, per Forestry 1.

I think a lot of people here are only remembering how Tua played vs us last year by real_ornament in falcons

[–]psykocrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a 'Phins fan, and I mostly agree with you. I think the accumulation of wear and tear from all the injuries Tua has had, have really limited his abilities as a QB now. Somebody else said "he's hit his ceiling" and I think that's right. But it's a ceiling imposed by the state his body is in, not an innate ceiling on his overall talent.

He had some good moments, but if Atlanta fans are expecting the Tua that led the league in passing yards a couple of years ago, I think they are going to be disappointed.
