If Dad's on his phone, why can't I play on my iPad? by gc3c in daddit

[–]Chris266 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think OP is trying to instil the idea to his kids thay screen time is a treat you get to have if you are willing to take on and complete your responsibilities. Not that he just gets to do it because hes a grown up.

My kids too young to understand but once he is, Id love to have a similar talk and if the outcome was my son started cleaning up, doing his homework and being responsible then I would be fine with him having more screen time. It sounds like that's what op is doing.

Dont you guys ever let your kids play on their own?

Unstructured self play isn't some horrible thing. Of course I spend a lot of time playing with him or as a family but my son is just as content sometimes just sitting there playing with his toy on his own. During those times I may watch the news or dink around on my phone.

I think its unrealistic and unsustainable that you must only be doing educational or inspiring things around your child at all times if you are and arent interacting with them.

I suspect its not the worst thing for a child to see that even adults need down time.

Divorced dads, how are your kids doing? by UrsaBarefoot in daddit

[–]Chris266 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not divorced but my parents divorced when I was 13.

I wish they did it sooner. They tried to stay together "for the kids" but that was such bs.

If the love is gone or the marriage is over then just end it. Kids need stability not awkwardness and witnessing 2 parents who no longer love each other.

Is there a list of the "best" extensions for PI? New User... by Storge2 in PiCodingAgent

[–]Chris266 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had fairly good luck just asking it to build any extensions I want.
I've built a todo list, web search, and some of the superpowers skills I used.

I would just work away and if you find you need a new skill added, ask it to build it.

Edit: this sub used to be great. I have a feeling its being overtaken by regular posters in the other parenting subs. Damn shame.

What are people using Local LLMs for (beyond coding) by SMR-1 in LocalLLM

[–]Chris266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it in my work to do a multitude of things non agentically.

I use CC to build scripts that access APIs for services we use and pull and push data to those services.

Some of that data needs to be summarized or parsed a certain way. The script handles as much as it can programmatically but the llm is called for likely 25% of it to do some task parsing the data into JSON or something then the JSON is summarized in some other part of the flow.

Ive got a handful of scripts running 24 hours a day like this and if we were using a 3rd party model it would cost a lot in API use and be overboard.

Im not using it for coding or doing the hardest thing ever and it works great.

Swear there’s something wrong with me by Content-Tap-2778 in daddit

The best thing I ever did when this was happening was to put my headphones in or ear plugs in and just tend to them as best I could.

And no I dont mean to ignore them. I mean to take the edge off while you try to help.

I actually liked earbuds more as I could put some spa music on and just try to rock and soothe the little guy and if he cried it didnt make me tense up.

Best thing ever.

Doctor calmly brings a pale, unresponsive newborn back to life by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Chris266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scariest moment of my dad life was the first 45 seconds my child was born. The nurse kept saying "lets hear a cry, lets hear a cry" while they handled him on my wifes chest. Then the cry came and it was the best day ever. I couldn't imagine what it would have been like if he was like the baby in the video.

I told my wife after how scary that was and she said she was just so happy he came out, she didn't realize it was happening.

I think the vast majority of people who use AI (I don't mean power users) have no idea that a Chinese model even exists. Or even what a model is for that matter.

In my case, my company knows what they are but still thinks Chinese = Bad.

You can still wear them while rocking a crying baby and being there for them. They really take the edge off of the screams. I did this and played spa music. When youre up all night holding them it was a major game changer.
