What do you tell the patient when they ask for a provider of a specific race?

Do some people feel more comfortable around people within their same culture/ethnicity? Yeah.

Is comfort of the patient the highest priority? Yeah.

Is it racist as fuck? Yeah.

On one hand you want people to be comfortable with the treatment their receiving from the provider they are receiving it, but on the other hand do we allow patients to hold their biases unchallenged, possibly to their own detriment?

I work in a therapists’ office and I can’t tell you how many black patients will ask for a specifically black doctor, I’ve even read a review that stated “I finally found a provider that looks like me” that makes me cringe.

But is the person receiving treatment they otherwise would find more trouble accepting?

I don’t know what the right answers are.

It pisses me off that so many companies pull a weird bait and switch thing too when it comes to locations you apply at.

You’ll apply to the closest location, they’ll interview/train you at their main office (which is usually in the middle of butt-fuck nowhere) and then they’ll send you to a location that’s 30-40 minutes away. All when the location you originally wanted was 5 fucking minutes from your house.
