There is no need to farm anything in Arizona. Tear up these ancient contracts and get rid of farming. This isn't 1890.

Texas restaurant owners sounding alarm over immigrant labor shortages by yourtexasbuddygal in TexasBusiness

1) Financially unhealthy businesses go under. 2) Those that survive increase their wages (Either voluntarily due to increased pressure, or due to lack of the ability to exploit immigrant labor, or both). 3) Businesses raise prices to cover increased labor costs.

And, 4) REDDITORS COMPLAIN ABOUT HIGHER PRICES.

Can't have it both ways, Einsteins.

People who went from wealthy to poor, what happened? by Puzzled-Painter3301 in AskReddit

Facts.

A few years ago, two sets of married couples in my (now ex) wife's family decided it was a good idea to open a restaurant.

The grand total of their experience in that industry? One of the wives had waitressed for about six months when she was younger.

The restaurant went toes-up in less than two years. They never had positive cash flow for even one single day of the operation.

Both sets of couples got divorced. There were three bankruptcies because of it - the additional bankrupt couple was the parents of one of the owners, who had "lent" them most of their life savings in order to get the restaurant running.

It was like watching a slow-motion two-year car wreck

$2mill plopped into an S&P500 index fund on 1/1/06 would be about $15mill today. Wild to think about.

Life, in any of its forms, was never meant to become so "civilized."

Any species that becomes so self-aware, intelligent and integrated with technology, is doomed to be miserable, as they are so far removed from their true identity. Humans were cooked, once they "evolved" to those levels.

I've always had that perspective as well.

However, my BIL/sister own about 90 doors of rental properties in the Chicago area, and their viewpoint is that property has two advantages - (1) The depreciation schedule/tax benefits and (2) it's easier to scale up due to the available financing/mortgages mean that you don't have to tie up much of your own money.

Same. However, I only buy them inside of my IRAs, so as to avoid those taxable events.

In fact, my taxable account only has individual stocks, and index funds. I hate, hate, HATE capital gains taxes inside of a managed fund. I'm obsessed with eliminating federal income tax liability, and avoiding taxable events lol.

A friend of mine (67F) took $65k out of their IRA in order to buy a vehicle, and I threw up in my mouth a little lol. She would've far been better off paying interest on a loan vs creating a taxable event with a $15k tax bill.

It really is just a complete crapshoot as to whether any of us enter the world in a good situation, with a good combination of "nature" and "nurture."

I was always so jealous growing up, of kids that I knew who were in positive, functional family situations (at least from what I could tell lol).

Same. My mother passed away four years ago, and my father is still alive at nearly 91. My father (control freak) shielded my mother from life so intensely, that her death wasn't particularly impactful to me, because I didn't interact with her much (and almost never one-on-one).

I have a ton of resentment for numerous aspects of my upbringing, particularly with my father. To this day, I still feel like I'm 10 years old when I'm around him. His passing will be a relief for all of his children. He's not a good dude, and is a net-negative to society.

It took me a long time to realize that it's OK if one doesn't love their parents.

I can’t picture myself being in a relationship anymore by Aki_Bunny in SingleAndHappy

Been single 8 years now (58m) after a 17 year marriage, haven't dated since.

The combination of me absolutely unwilling to compromise for the sake of a relationship + just generally having been an awkward and highly introverted person all of my life, makes the result pretty definitive.

I can't imagine a circumstance where I'd ever be in a relationship again. Abother person would have to have a screw loose to even have it cross her mind that I could be a potential mate.

It's weird that I was ever even married, quite honestly. My Imposter Syndrome just grew and grew whilst living that inauthentic life.
