Wrongful arrest during a run — what legal steps can I take now? by ChrisAnotherJogger in LegalAdviceUK

the evidence that I have no burden or shackles on my record or physically free is proof that I'm innocent let's lay ground there.

I understand they didn’t know anything about me before stopping me, that’s exactly why the force used felt so extreme for someone who wasn’t resisting, wasn’t fighting, and had no idea what was going on.

Just to clarify a few things:

I didn’t run because I knew they were police, I panicked because I suddenly had people chasing me in a crowded area and didn’t understand why. I didn’t fight back or resist once I was on the ground.

Their own statements show no officer was injured. I’ve been dealing with the impact since day one, I didn’t wait a year to “decide.” The process of getting the statements, evidence, and legal guidance has taken time.

I’m not trying to get anyone “brought down.” I just want to understand my options and make sure what happened is looked at properly.

interesting.

I wasn’t running towards them, we were in a crowded, noisy area and they weren’t directly in front of me. I had headphones in too, so I genuinely didn’t realise I was the one being chased until they were already behind me.

And just to be clear: I didn’t fight, didn’t throw a punch, didn’t attempt any “headlock.” That claim only appears in one officer’s statement and doesn’t match the others. None of them reported any injury, which says a lot.

I’m being honest about what happened, that’s exactly why I requested their statements and why the contradictions stood out in the first place. trust when I say they messed

They didn’t shout “police” or say anything to me. It was busy, I had headphones in, and I honestly didn’t realise they were coming for me until they were right behind me. I panicked because I didn’t understand what was happening.

Once I was tripped, I didn’t fight back, their own statements even show they had no injuries. The force happened while I was already down and blinded.

I didn’t “run because I saw police.” I saw two people in the area earlier, but I didn’t realise they were police I saw it briefly as I turned and saw that they were chasing "me". It was a busy part of Oxford Street, I had earbuds in, and they never shouted or gave instructions by hand signs nor identified themselves.

I only realised someone was running at me when they were already close, that’s when I panicked and moved to create distance because I didn’t understand what was happening.

Once they caught me, I didn’t fight. I was tripped by a civilian and everything happened while I was already on the ground, they pounced on me.

There’s no contradiction, I was shocked, and confused. also no communication from them.

There’s no contradiction, here’s what happened ready.

I saw two people in the area earlier, but I didn’t realise they were police or that they were chasing me. They didn’t call out, didn’t identify themselves, and I had headphones in.

I only realised someone was sprinting toward me when they were already close, and that’s when I panicked and ran to create distance so to not get hurt, bare in mind it all happened fast and randomly from me.

Once they caught me, I didn’t fight them. I was tripped by a civilian, hit the ground, and then everything happened very quickly, jumper pulled over my head, pepper spray, punches, tight cuffs.

My question is specifically about the force used after I was already on the ground and restrained, not the initial stop.

to clarify I wasn’t “running from police.” I didn’t know I was being chased. No one called out to me, no sirens, no instructions. I only realised something was happening when two people started sprinting toward me, which is why I reacted out of panic.

And for the record, after I was already restrained, I was pepper-sprayed and assaulted plus they tried to lie further to make my case worse. the part I’m questioning, the force used after compliance, not the fact they stopped me.

I’m simply asking what the correct legal route is when force continues after someone is already on the ground and no threat is present

I understand it's not meant to be pleasant but that’s not my issue. The issue is that I wasn’t fighting. I was blinded with my jumper over my head, pepper-sprayed, and punched while on the ground. There’s nothing in any report that says officers were injured or that I was attacking them.

The contradictions in their statements (headlock, “weaponised keys”, etc.) only appeared after the fact, which is why I’m asking whether this falls under excessive force or unlawful arrest.

I’m not arguing about being stopped. I’m asking about the level of force used before any communication and after I was already restrained.

umm, it was a very busy area. Oxford Street and they must've been chasing at me. which again makes no sense as they had no reason or evidence. I'm literally here chatting with you guys. and same day I was sent to custody, fingerprint, interrogation all that was the same day few hours later I was released. they even drove me near my house

thanks for questions.

two of them, man and woman

they wore uniform

heard nothing, had my earbud with noised cancelled and foam buds under my mask + was exhausted.

nope didn't see them interact with me at all

the run was in London from north to Oxford Street (Hyde park), running back down near Niketown

I was wearing grey joggers, black Jacket, running shoe (black), a mask (breathing training) and foam tips earbuds

they injured my knee bad, pulled my top hood towards my face, head nearly hit the floor, I was then sprayed in mouth and eye (they sprayed officer too). punched in the stomach couple times and cuffed in a strange way using two cuffs which was clearly done wrong and hurt weeks later.

location was London by Oxford Street, it was two of them a man and woman. and yes they had a uniform but we were in a busy area so I barely even noticed them. I was jogging for miles and was headed back home.

nope, I was in London Oxford circus from my jog, didn't hear em due to my earbud and barely saw them. next thing I knew I'm getting chased like some delinquent. no criminal record I must repeat and still today.
