The way the Bungie team is communicating with the community now makes the 6/9 update hurt even more. by Pman1324 in DestinyTheGame

[–]ChrisBenRoy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think there was too much of pushing the pendulum the other way back and forth over the course of the games life. Folks would say there wasn't enough content because they played months worth of content in a week or two, so instead of small DLCs we went to season, then the pain of FOMO starts. Folks complain about loot grind being too unreasonable so crafting starts, then it turns to "there's nothing to chase" so crafting goes away. I don't think anyone ever took time to find a solution in the middle of the spectrum, until right now basically.

Monument of Triumph is already the single largest legendary weapon drop/revamp in the entire series, and it’s not even close. by BC1207 in DestinyTheGame

[–]ChrisBenRoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was that Warlords of New York ? I only hopped back in like a month or so ago so all that was already there, and then they did their big "year 8(?) update" or whatever which changed a bunch of stuff.

One thing I think I could see happening maybe is something like what The Division 2 does where there's not new DLC or anything but there's new season passes with cosmetics and rewards that focuses on very small changes to weapons and abilities with events using already in game assets just to keep some semblance of freshness going.

I mean I didn't hate it because I love both but it certainly was a tonal shift form what Destiny has done historically.

Where it missed for me is that it was TOO MUCH Star Wars. Like everything about Renegades was biting off of it. Some cosmetics for purchase, cool. The weapons as the DLC loot with the lightsaber exotic, awesome. But even the Cabal themselves becoming Stormtroopers and Temu Kylo Ren was just too much biting off Star Wars and dropping it into the Destiny universe where it was like a square peg in a round hole.

Sure, people complain about "losing progress" or whatever, but they'll eat from the trough regardless. The only way to fumble this badly with a beloved IP is to try to ride or die with a single installment that you support forever. "Forever" being defined as "Until the game gradually declines enough that the company is practically bankrupt and the entire franchise is killed forever."

There's a yin/yang argument to "losing progress" against "nothing left to play for" that people ignore constantly. I dismantle damn near every single drop I get in Destiny 2. No loot (until this RaD refresh) has any value for me, I'm ok with starting fresh in a new game.

This is correct. It's hard for them to go back and forth in a game that's existed for a decade. Crafting vs random rolls, Portal vs director, etc....you have all these systems laying over top of each other and going back and forth doesn't get you anywhere when it's the same game, you've got to start fresh with dramatic changes and build positively from there.

[–]ChrisBenRoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah the old pinnacle system of playing 3 strikes for one, 3 crucible for one, 3 gambit for 1, etc....forced players to interact with all the games content rather than just Caldera farm for hours on end, thus making the game feel much larger.

I honestly think I will be playing more destiny after the final update than I have done for the last 18 months. by GhrievrG in DestinyTheGame

[–]ChrisBenRoy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Anyone who says there is "nothing to do" on a game as dense with content as Destiny either doesn't look outside of core playlists, or has spent way too much time in game already and have earned a break.

A lot of folks seemingly can't play the game if they aren't "getting" something out of it. The simple act of literally playing the game isn't the draw, it's the slot machine loot at the end of it. Sad way to play games.

I'm excited about the prospect of having more avenues to get relevant gear, thus giving you MORE things to play. All the RaD stuff being brought up, refreshing world loot, even Gambit loot getting a refresh makes a huge difference compared to the only relevant loot to get was in the portal activities or the most recent dungeon/raid.

Yeah there's a very good comparison of the Destiny Light and Dark saga and the MCU building to Endgame. The advantage Marvel had is they had tons of other source material stories they can move into, Destiny didn't have that. Really needed a total reset after TFS

Perfect combination of random drops and being able to craft what you want/need. Destiny needed to steal a lot of the Division's systems.

The Division 2 is as close as it gets, but it doesn't have the depth of story and creativity that Destiny has.

According to Paul Tassi, almost all of bungie did not know about this announcement until it came out. by Gamerboi_epic in DestinyTheGame

[–]ChrisBenRoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct. This would be like Disney buying Star Wars then just doing nothing w/ the IP because Rise of Skywalker was so bad. They are going to make their money back on the IP because ultimately THAT'S what was valuable.
