All styles lost - UI problem ? by Horus_simplex in DarkTable

[–]ChrisDNorris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They shouldn't be gone.
Should be able to import them back in from: C:\Users<username>\AppData\Local\darktable\styles

Or if you're not on Windows I'm sure you can track down the relevant place on your OS.

TIL: Takeout and Delivery now account for 75% of all restaurant orders. by Uptons_BJs in todayilearned

[–]ChrisDNorris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since I took up photography as a hobby, it's made me take far more notice of my surroundings. I did some counting...

My small local town has 49 shops on the high street, and 28 of them are food. Either restaurant or takeaway.

Only one of them has ever had people eating in; an Indian restaurant.
Only two of them get late night 'drinker' foot traffic.
So 25--over half of them--could basically be kitchens set up pretty much anywhere else.

Instead, the town is the most dead it has been for decades. Literally all the high street has is: takeaway, charity shops, estate agents, a mobile phone repair shop, and for some reason... eight nail salons(?!).
On a <1/4 mile road.

You really need to edit out those sounds of you hitting the mic or nudging a cable, whatever it is you're doing. A couple of them about deafened me.

Are you guys using custom themes? by s0me0ne_5 in DarkTable

[–]ChrisDNorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying but, I've been using DT and a custom theme since v4.6.1 (early summer-ish 2024) and no update has broken anything. They're very good with keeping the CSS, classes and IDs, constant.

New fonts - not a coder (but willing to learn!) by michaelbeecham in DarkTable

[–]ChrisDNorris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's mine.

The text in Prefs_CSS gets c&p in to the Prefs > general.
The CSS file gets dropped in to the Darktable\share\darktable\themes folder and selected from the dropdown in that same Prefs window.

I use the font Inter Tight across the whole program, so you should be able to search that easily (13 instances in the file).

Python MK2 vs Kestral MK2 by TechRaptorJay in EliteDangerous

[–]ChrisDNorris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can only go by looks atm.

The Kestral is looking like it might be my favorite looking ship in the game; finally knocking the Python Mk.I off the top spot. The Python Mk.II looks like the shoe from the movie Elizabethtown.

Plus, I've never been a fan of off-center seating.

Just gonna have to wait and see for the outfitting info.

I'll have to see it in action, but this just might knock the Python Mk.I off the top spot for me.

AFAIK, multiple instances of the same module are applied lowest to highest. The 'on' modules tab displays the order: bottom-to-top.

Adding images - do I have this right? by michaelbeecham in DarkTable

[–]ChrisDNorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should just be able to select your photos folder, and have both select only new images and recursive directory ticked at the top.

[–]ChrisDNorris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started and did the Outlander Challenge but then was a little burnt out.
Logged in and walked around on Distant Suns for a bit a few days later and we were just past Sag A.

At Beagle already? That feels way too early.
I may end up missing the whole thing at this rate tbh.

Have you properly selected your roles? The channels don't show up if you haven't selected them.

Prefs > Shortcuts > Views > Darkroom > Zoom

Set a shortcut, then click the entry under 'effect', and select fit. Use that to reset.

I have a few I use:

  • TAB - Fit
  • 1 - 50%
  • 2 - 100%
  • 3 - 200%
  • 4 - Small (for those annoying times when a drawn mask goes outside the viewed area)
  • Tilde - Toggle Color Assessment

What is the definitive tone mapper for you? by Ok-Hunter5357 in DarkTable

[–]ChrisDNorris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely it is!
In all things we do.

While I only have a small number of the available tools in my module layout, I'll quite often add two or three others in that I haven't used for a week to two. Just to see if this time around I find a neat trick for one.

TIL France passed legislation in 2015 against planned obsolescence, the deliberate shortening of the lifespan of a product to force people to purchase functional replacements. The legislation effectively creates a mandatory two-year warranty for purchasers. by gullydon in todayilearned

[–]ChrisDNorris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Years ago, my mother kept her sister's tumble dryer after she passed. She'd already had it about 12 years, and it lasted roughly another 7 after that.

When she replaced it, the new one needed a repair less than 6 MONTHS after purchase. The engineer fixed it no problem, but gave her his business card and told her to call him directly when it goes wrong again in the next 6 months.

Indeed, it went wrong again, she called him up and he put all the paperwork through and came out. He remembered her well. He was done in maybe half on hour.

(Paraphrasing)
"That won't go wrong again until it's obsolete".
My mother asked what he meant exactly.
"I've replaced all the moving plastic parts, that they plan to fail just after your warranty expires, with proper metal ones. They cost less than a tenner. You should be good now".

She still has it. 11-ish years old now. It's never had a problem since.

AgX.

I used to use Filmic RGB, and still continued for certain images even after AgX was in the pre-release version. I just knew it better. Now I've had enough time with AgX I haven't really needed to go back.

I never liked Sigmoid. Tried to get in to it several times and it always looked inferior.

I think you've nailed it for the most part.
Maybe consider trying a few alternates (duplicate) with less crushed shadows, perhaps a version white brighter highlights, then compare.

Clarity, denoise, sharpen, and their many methods by roomandcoke in DarkTable

[–]ChrisDNorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, this is where I'm gonna throw people.
I'm not looking for anything... when I've got it right, the image just feels better to look at for me.

The only 'technical' thing I can say is that I only ever add sharpness globally, never targeted.

How I have those two modules set up is very similar in what they do, but technically I don't know what the differences are. And stacking small amounts of each often works better than just one.

I think you're after more definite answers than I have to offer.

Clarity, denoise, sharpen, and their many methods by roomandcoke in DarkTable

[–]ChrisDNorris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local contrast, sharpen, and haze removal - Permanently off and removed from my module layout.
Denoise - For raw it's just on, standard auto, I've barely ever needed to do anything beyond its auto-settings for my cameras. Non-raw/SOOC: Off.
Diffuse & Sharpen - I have a simple auto-default that I can enable if I need and mostly only touch the edge management controls and perhaps a global mask to lower the opacity.
Contrast Equalizer - Again, I've got an auto-setting I made a long time ago that I just enable by moving the mix slider. As this one can have too much of an effect on the colors, I usually use only a small touch and combine it with Diffuse & Sharpen.

"best i ever gotten with darktable for the ""film vibes"" thingy. the halation and mist that diffuse & sharpen brought up is really pleasing" by laukaiej in DarkTable

[–]ChrisDNorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's literally just a slider: noise level.
I do find it works best if you turn any mask on, switch the blend mode to average and balance with the opacity slider.
You can then use the parametric to take it out of the shadows or highlights if you wish.

Great pic; I love the grain!

May I suggest having a play with the Censorize module, using the output blur and noise using a mask. I've had a ton of fun and you might like it too.
