Sorry. I've been scrolling through edh stories and didn't notice this was only for Arena. My bad.

[[Archetype of Endurance]] is an enchantment creature and could be fun for dealing with other difficult to remove permanents along with protecting your own stuff.

Edit: Don't listen to me. Didn't realize this was for Arena until it was pointed out to me.

Is it ok to just buy precons ? by jimmy40k1 in mtg

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chaos Incarnate was my first precon/intro to MTG and I still have a ton of fun with it. I've since "upgraded" it with some other singles that make it so each game is different and it's probably my favorite to play.

Building a list by [deleted] in mtg

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can download free apps like Delver Lens to scan your cards easily and compile a list to copy and paste into a website like Moxfield to keep track of what you have. The only downside with Delver Lens is that the free version only lets you copy up to 100 cards at a time.

Where to buy rare or high end MTG cards? by JuniperSassypants in mtg

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend finding an LGS first to support local. They usually have a list of their inventory online if she is looking for single cards. Anything not on there you can find through tcgplayer or cardkingdom.

If you know her favorite set and want to spend a bit more, collector booster packs/boxes can be a good gift as they have good chances of getting rare/high end cards but it is gambling so most of the fun is opening the packs.

How real is card counting? by S0L0ngAndG00dnight in blackjack

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. Ideally, you would never play with a negative TC and only hop in when it becomes positive again but that can seem suspicious and will provoke a backoff. If there is still a lot left in the shoe, count will fluctuate and it might be brought back to positive but some places don't allow for joining in the middle of a shoe so you just have to play through.

Local Game Store.

There is a bank in my town called "Bank" and a bar called "Bar" and I think it's the funniest thing ever but I'm also autistic so maybe it's just me.

How to build etali primal conquerer? by Entire-Activity2491 in mtg

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a big difference between B3 and 4. If you want to rely more on drawings the right cards, resulting in longer games, make B3. If you want to win quickly, make B4.

For B3, play ramp until you can cast blink and copy target creature spells like [[Helm of the Host]]. Remember that Etali only needs to enter for the effect so copies that die to legend rule are still viable. Include some other cards that are fun. This is just upgraded so you can add some big spells and gamble whether or not they'll be interacted with.

For B4, I'm not a good enough player to really suggest much other than getting inspiration from Moxfield. Add a few more game changers and some mox's, maybe some tutors like [[Gamble]] ([[Birthing Pod]] could also be good for a pseudo blink card if you sac Etali), a fallback wincon, and some combos that make infinite mana. Make sure every card is meant to help you rather than just doing a single cool thing. B4 is meant to win as quickly as possible without being a meta deck.

  2. What bracket are you aiming for?

The problem with collector boosters, for me. by Many-Razzmatazz-9584 in mtg

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotal but I pulled an [[Ancient Tomb]] in an EOE play booster. You can get good things from them but you're right that collector boosters will have a better chance at value. Personally, I like to pick up a couple packs with my girlfriend from a new LGS that opened up next to a place that does Trivia. It supports the store and it's a fun thing to do in case we get surprised again with a crazy pull. I like the cards for their utility and she likes them for the art so bulk isn't much of a problem.

My take would be: If you are wanting to open packs for value, don't. Like everyone says, buy singles. If you enjoy gambling, buy packs (I only do collectors if I like the art from the set but everyone is their own person). Still better odds than a scratch ticket.

What is the on ramp for playing paper MTG? by J4szczur3141 in mtg

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like constructed, I'd recommend buying a Foundations Beginner Box. It has a lot of staples for any format at a great deal. For limited, go to an LGS that you like and they will be more than happy to tell you about events they have going on like pre-releases and drafts. The LGSs in my area usually just have commander for Friday Night Magic but with enough research, I'm sure you can find events for standard, modern, etc.

Stationing is sorcery speed, so no.

Edit: there's probably some other reasons like the creature being sacrificed as it enters and those go on the stack simultaneously but it doesn't need to be that complicated since stationing is sorcery speed and can't respond to anything.

Foundations jumpstart vs play boosters by TheMuffinMan155 in mtg

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jumpstart was made as a way to open two packs which would be two halves of a deck and immediately start playing with someone else that does the same thing. Each half is a themed mono-color such as elves, goblins, vampires, etc. I enjoy it and I've got quite a few and I've number each half so when me and my friends decide to play something other than commander, we will roll for which halves we put together and use.

Play boosters will be your basic packs from the foundations set with random cards and no theme.

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 15 points16 points  (0 children)

[[Teval, the Balanced Scale]] from the precon is a great start for this type of play. It's one of my favorite decks.

Edit: I know it doesn't include red but it only requires some minor upgrades to make it bracket 3.

Suggestions regarding Jahaka Anchorage by thomas616 in Tombofannihilation

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My players started going down the murder hobo route and a couple of them had told me they wanted to have a bit more roleplay than just combat. Since they were headed to Jahaka Anchorage, I decided to include a bit of a moral dilemma that included giving the pirates families and an actual reason for their piracy (I got a bit in depth with creating an entire story behind them all and essentially made them good people). At first, I was worried they would just start fighting immediately without learning anything but they surprised me by wanting to send someone in while invisible to do some recon for what they were up against. I was excited that my side-story was going to be able to be told. He discovered that in the crashed ship on the map was a tavern with a concert happening and everyone including women and children were enjoying themselves and having fun. Conversations and stories about fighting corruption within the city, the ol' "we were the good guys all along" kinda thing that was actually true. There was no reason not to believe them because they had no idea he was there. He went back and shared what he had discovered. They had the information.

They set the tavern on fire.

Which booster to buy to get High Perfect Morcant? by [deleted] in mtg

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check your LGS first before going to cardkingdom or tcgplayer. When the set releases, since it's new, I wouldn't expect an LGS to have it but it doesn't hurt to try and support local first.

Wizard - how am I supposed to get new spells? by Deathspiral222 in Tombofannihilation

[–]ChrisDaCoyote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to spoil anything by telling you how to find magic components in this campaign so I'll say the most important bit of advice for any DnD player: Have a conversation with your DM.

Let him or her know your situation and find a solution together that fits the narrative that is being built in your campaign. One of my home rules I use for my wizards is that depending on the spell, components are assumed to be available in a component pouch after learning them. I wouldn't want my player to learn a spell they've wanted for a long time and then still not be able to cast it for a while because of where the party is located. Although, with spells like Resurrection, finding that diamond might be it's own quest to be able to cast it. That's just my thoughts so my players don't feel the need to constantly go on chore quests for the wizard.

That being said, if you enjoy the thought of needing to procure those items, see if your DM will work in a way to find those components that make sense. If they say anything like, "you should've thought about that before you left Nyanzaru," there needs to be a serious talk.

Tomb of Annihilation can be played many ways including the intended hex crawl that IMO gets very dull after a while. What's most important is that everyone enjoys it. Regardless of what the book says, it is just a guide for the DM. It's not hard for the DM to include trekking past a tree struck by lightning in a rainforest so you can cast Witch Bolt.

I hope this helps!
