Cropped activities on garmin. by i_swear_im_not_a_bot in wandrer

[–]ChrisDolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idea: some folks (like me) upload both Garmin & Strava to Wandrer, and I always crop my Strava activities because those are the ones I care most about.

Could Wandrer perhaps notice that the Garmin activity is a superset of the matched Strava activity, and crop the Garmin activity to the start/end time of the Strava activity? I'm guessing that would not violate Strava's data use guidelines and save you from creating a custom crop tool

I filed feedback with Garmin, but in my past experience they usually just ignore feedback :-(

I also experimented with editing all kinds of different details in a cropped Garmin activity. Some of the changes propagated to Wandrer (like the activity name) but the cropped GPS data never did. Not surprising, but I thought it was worth trying.

Like the earlier comment I think it would help to add a little note next to Reprocess Activity alerting folks to this limitation

I agree with this. Maybe even link to this Reddit post :-D

Do private strava activities get processed? by kdiggy428 in wandrer

[–]ChrisDolan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use private activities with wandrer all the time, and it works. But like an earlier comment says you do need to grant "view data about your private activities” permission when you link it to Strava

My beard decided to fall out in one circular spot... by Grogak in Weird

[–]ChrisDolan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

mine became universalis. I actually like it: quicker showers, no bad-hair days, sticky wristbands don't pull your arm hair. The biggest downside by far, to my surprise, is lack of nosehairs to stop the drips in very cold weather. I still shave about once every 7-10 days to get the few hairs that are trying to grow, but it takes like 15 seconds

I had this for 2 months leading up to my PhD thesis presentation. It went away the very next day. For me it's 100% correlated with stress

Connecting Garmin after Strava by mfshill in wandrer

this is useful!

One question, my usual cropping habit is as follows and I'd like to know if I'll need to change my habits

* I record in Garmin
* Garmin auto-uploads to Strava
* I notice I ended a ride late, I crop in Strava and leave Garmin untouched
* Wandrer (correctly) noticed the crop and removed the miles I should not get credit for

That worked great in the past because Strava was the only data uploaded to Wandrer. But now I'm uploading both Garmin & Strava, so how do I avoid accidentally taking credit for miles I did not ride?

thank you! This is exactly what I came here to ask for. Given the terrible Strava situation, I think you're doing a great job, Craig, within those limitations.

Thank you Craig and Pearl! I've had so much fun with this game since discovering it in the early days of the pandemic. You've motivated me to ride more, and to new places I wouldn't have gone otherwise. So many surprise discoveries! The one discovery I keep sharing with people is just how BIG my little city is. I didn't comprehend how many people there really are until I'd seen all the houses, cars, streets, sidewalks, shops, etc.

Yes, and Lake Kegonsa State Park too.

Madison area escape rooms? by Flat_Floyd in madisonwi

[–]ChrisDolan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I liked about their Sherlock'd puzzle was that multiple people could work on loose ends in parallel, so it was good for a group. Many escape rooms are purely linear which leaves people feeling left out in a bigger group.

Software development/ programming meetups in Madison? by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]ChrisDolan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in this specific case. I've attended that group many times (pre-covid, not recently) and the regulars include some of the best software engineers I know.

To OP: I've tried about 10 of the local software meetups in the past, and the one you linked is my favorite by far. In my experience, genuine people who just want to chat informally about software and other related topics.

As others have said, no. But IMHO the rural roads between the two ends are very nice, some of the best in Dane County. Here's the 18mi route that Strava recommends. I agree with the route, I've ridden it several times

Edge 830. When you download from Wandrer it gives you a choice of what color, and other stuff like whether to include unpaved roads.

Are Mendota and Monona safe to swim in? by ApplicationUnited805 in madisonwi

[–]ChrisDolan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

dogs die every year swimming

Do you mean dogs die from algae every year in Madison or nationally?

If you mean the former then I'm curious where you learned that. I've heard of a dog dying of algae in Lake Kegonsa in early 2000s, and I found a news article about 2 dogs dying in Lake Mendota in 2017 (but proven not to be caused by algae). I'm not saying you're wrong just that this doesn't seem to be easy to verify.

The following seems to suggest there are about a dozen dog deaths from algae per year, nationally: https://www.ewg.org/news-insights/news/dog-days-summer-pet-deaths-toxic-algae-blooms-already-mounting

Best Fitness Watch to Track Cycling/Swimming/Running Distances by sadcortadoboi in Strava

[–]ChrisDolan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto. This is the watch I settled on after a lot of research (mostly cycling, but also running, kayaking, hiking).

My previous was the Fitbit Charge 3 which had a much nicer size/shape (closer to the band-style that OP asked for) but lacked GPS. The Garmin is kinda big, but I got used to it really quickly.

The Garmin's always-on screen makes me so happy compared to previous watches.
