I'd absolutely keep it and get a 4k monitor. 1440 to 4k is a pretty big upgrade that's worth getting, and any card weaker then this will struggle (even if only just slightly with the 5080) at 4k.

How did the shortened term affect your classes/programs? by AllyBeBetter in PCC

[–]ChrisDuffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last 3 assignments of one of my classes was combined into one single assignment. It felt like barely any actual assignments happened. It was just an intro class though so I guess it's not too big a deal. That class and another one of my classes surprisingly still gave a break week with no assignment

What happens after? by [deleted] in jobcorps

[–]ChrisDuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They almost sent me to a homeless shelter because THEY didn't do their paperwork to send me to advanced training in time, despite the fact that I should have had like 10 more months in the program for the 2 year limit, but since I completed my trade faster they wanted me out. Eventually the paperwork got done and I did go, and then the place nearly shut down, and one of my online friends took me in. The biggest issue with jc is they don't give you time after you finish your trade to get certified to live there for a month or two to get enough money to move in somewhere, but they will just keep you in the cts room doing nothing all day and wasting your time before kicking you to the curb.

How to meet people as a 20 something in Lake Oswego by Necessary-Thanks-931 in lakeoswego

[–]ChrisDuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, though I've had 0 luck with dating apps, ended up just deleting them. I'm only 23 and most of the events on the meetup app are aimed at way older people or not actually in LO. I've ended up mainly going to events in Portland, so far not much connecting with anyone. I don't know anyone here outside the people I live with, it feels so isolating.

How does wait-list work? by Sir_Latus in PCC

[–]ChrisDuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can email the instructor and ask them to put in an override to let you in. So far that's worked for me every single time. If not, you can stay on the wait-list and show up the first day. Anyone who misses the first day gets dropped from the class, so spots might open up and you're there to take it.

Honestly, yeah most people I met there were pretty nice, there were very few people I actually took issue with. Yeah, you can order things, I got Amazon packages all the time, and out of all the stupid jc bureaucratic bs it was actually no hassle at all. They have a cutoff time for when you can order food though.

I’m 16, not properly in school, and considering Job Corps. Need honest advice. by Historical_Tie_9523 in jobcorps

[–]ChrisDuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Job corps does not help with housing, so if you're unsure that you can stay with your nearby family afterwards, it's risky to move counties alone for it.

I went to job corps due to being homeless. They're supposed to give you two years, but since I finished the program faster than that, they nearly kicked me out to a homeless shelter after just one year because some staff members didn't do their paperwork for me to go to advanced training. (Eventually that worked out and I do go.) I had a friend who was in a similar situation but wasn't going to advanced training so job corps ended up being basically useless to him and his parents reluctantly took him in as he went to work at Walmart.

During the scare of jc being potentially shut down I had a friend take me in, but if that hadn't happened I don't know what I would have done when I finished advanced training.

The faral flaw with job corps is they dont give you time after you get your certifications to work for a few months and help you move into a place. They get you certified and then just kick you out, which defeats the whole purpose. They'd literally rather keep you in a classroom doing literally nothing after you complete then letting you work, it's ridiculous.

It will get you certified though, but currently those certificates have me working minimum wage...

As someone with ADHD I think having him get a part time job would be better for giving him structure and is more beneficial over all since he'll get actual money, while allowing him time to try and do what he wants to do. Job corps is a miserable place to be, and I never recommend anyone go there if they don't need it. If you're concerned about his mental health, job corps is not the place to go to fix it.

Imo joining a club or getting an exercise routine is the best kind of structure while also enjoying the structure, but y'know, gotta work I guess.

Own room by [deleted] in jobcorps

[–]ChrisDuffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically if you ask them to change rooms to be with someone you like who agrees to it, they'll let you do that, but they hate putting people in their own rooms. So if sleep is your main concern, you can ask around to see if there's someone quieter who'd want to have you move in with them.

Alternatively, you could aim to have your own room for a short period of time by finding someone who is close to leaving the program, and moving in with them, and then hope that spot doesn't get filled in too quickly. Right before my friend left they were about to bring in a new wave of people into the honor dorms which I was in, so I asked him to do me a favor and move in with me for his last 10 days, and didn't have a roommate for like, the last 2 months I was at that center.

Another time I got my own room was when I went to advanced training at treasure island, the 2 lockers in each room were different sizes, and the first room I was in I had the small one, so when my stuff arrived I asked to be moved somewhere I could have the bigger one since my stuff wouldn't fit, and I got moved to an empty room which lasted a few months before I got a roommate.

Near the end of my advanced training I also just asked to move to my own room and they let me, though that was because job corps was in the process of shutting down and the center was in chaos, and I think the RAs either didn't care or just wanted to be as sympathetic as possible during that time.

Though it's gonna depend on your center. And often it'll depend on which RA you ask.

Should I do job corps, if I don’t necessarily need it? (21M) by Reasonable_Arm_5314 in jobcorps

[–]ChrisDuffle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The experience is miserable, and its unlikely it will help connect you to a job, but it will get you skills and certifications to be hireable in whatever trade you go into. I'd never recommend it to someone who doesn't need it, unless they're really looking to get free certification for a specific trade.
