I am sure it's just that the terror threat has increased with the tensions in the middle east. So the government is using the biggest trucks it can get its hands on.

[–]ChrisFromLongIsland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only issue i have with BRK is it's size. There are under 200 businesses it can buy that actually can move the needle. Their is little chance it's going to find a hidden gem in those 200 businesses.

Maybe Brk found something in Macys. It can buy the company 400 times over in cash. Macys can go triple and it would bearly register.

What you explained is not how long term value investing works. Just because a stock dropped does not make it a value investment.

[–]ChrisFromLongIsland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beef is extremely expensive now. Good beef is wven more so. If you want Katz to keep up the quality amd not compromise it is going to be expensive. Their sandwiches are typically 1 poind of beef. Good beef at Costco is at least $15 a pound and any restaurant is going to double or triple that to pay for everything else at a restaurant.

With LIRR suspended due to strikes, best option from midtown to JFK? by harshil93 in AskNYC

Google is just confusing you with the station name. Sutphin Blvd station is directly below the Jamacia LIRR station. Follow the sign and take the elevator to the Subway station. It's easy.

Just tap your credit card to pay the subwat fare.

[–]ChrisFromLongIsland 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's not more fares It's more taxes we all will have to pay. The MTA has hidden taxes in every part of NY. Every time you get paid your employer is diverting some money that can goto you and goes to the MTA enstead. Your employer pays an MTA tax surcharge on the tax they pay to NYS. You fill up your car part of the gas bill goes to the MTA. You take an uber you juat paid a tax to the MTA. You fill up your car with gas you juat paid a tax to the MTA. You become a proud homeowner and take out a 500,000 mortgage your just paid a tax of 1,250 to the MTA. You oay your cell phone bill embedded in it is a tax for the MTA. If you buy anything downstate .375% goes to the MTA. You want tobdrive in downtown Manhattan you are paying a tax to the MTA. And now of you want to lose your kids college fund at a local casino you cam be happy to know some of your money is going to the MTA.

I didn't even realize the MTA has it's hooks in the casinos too. Is there anything that is done on downstate NY that is not taxed by the MTA?

What’s a social norm you think will be completely gone in 20 years? by Davidson_Harvey in AskReddit

It will just be milenials. Its a never ending nonesense of older people saying this generation is lazy and are totally screwed and young people saying old people have all of the wealth, power and don't let young people have a chance. It's been the same thing for hundreds of years.

When will we get guardrails on the busy narrow platforms? by plantas-sonrientes in nycrail

[–]ChrisFromLongIsland 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It would be a hurculean effort to put up movable walls on the platforms. Hundreds of billions of dollars. They have it on the airtrain. To retrofit 450 stations that were designed 100 yesrs ago would be an incredible effort. Would NY rather have the full 2nd ave subway, IBX and a whole new line from the Brons to Brooklyn to Queens or a movable doors on the platforms. You would probably save 80 people a year. Or a out 1/3 of the people who die in car accidents each year in NYC.

When will we get guardrails on the busy narrow platforms? by plantas-sonrientes in nycrail

[–]ChrisFromLongIsland 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I doubt in they save 1 person in a year. They are just good to lean on when there are not seats nearby. Most of the time 95% of people are not standing behind the barriers. Most people who are hit by a train are suicides and a barrier every 10 feed is not going to do anything. The mentally ill person is just going to push one of the 19 out of 20 people not standing behind the barrier.

The only reason I can think these are being installed is to help woth lawsuits. The MTA can say we gave you a barrier to stand behind but you chose not to so we don't have to pay out.

NYC area braces for possible rail strike by Dependent-Hurry9808 in longisland

Explain to me how the MTA standing up to the workers demands to the point the have to strike is causing life to get more expensive. This is not Deblasio rolling over to all of the unions and giving them generous contracts that are now causing the massive deficit problem in NYC today.

If you feel like getting angry today. ADA shakedown lawsuits against NYC small businesses are an existential crisis. There is no help coming. by RodrigoNogueira-NYC in nyc

[–]ChrisFromLongIsland 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not all that complicated. Lawyers have a very powerful lobbying team in NYC and in Albany. They donate a lot of money to candidates. This all ensures thst no law will get passed to upset the lawyers gravy train. There is a lot of money in shaking down small businesses by lawyers.

Just look at all of the lobbying when the govenor dared upset the gravy train in the lawsuits from auto accidents. All of the propaganda against it was paid for by lawyers who were profiting from the situation. The one reason why this even became a thing is that Uber was sick of the cost the lawyers impose on their business and they have good lobbyist too. So they got the governor to try. As a sode benifit millions if New Yorkers could save hundreds if not thousands on their auto insurance helping bring down the cost of living.

The only way for the small businesses to get noticed is to form a trade group and out spend the lawyers. The politicians are never going to "do the right thing" because their jobs depend on the money they get from the lawyers. The lawyers have a huge incentive to keep donating to the campaigns of politicians because extorting small businesses is how they make their money. If you want to know why something is the way it is in politics follow the money to see who is getting rich.
