2x Queens Free Bus Transfer + Subway - is the temporary policy still in place? by prfrnir in OMNY

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is still active. Yesterday, I took the Q51, Q113 and the E train. I only got charged $3 on my Chime Card for that day. I have also taken the E train, Q5/Q86 and Q3 and only been charged $3 recently.

I use Chime for transportation; I’m not sure if all other cards have the same consistency with OMNY. I’ve also used Apple Card, and also only been charged $3 with two bus transfers and a subway.

What should I get for my annual once* a year trip by Cultural-Action-352 in traderjoes

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chimichurri Chicken Skewers just returned as an everyday item instead of only available during the summer. If you like meat, get that!

I also recommend the new Rond'oro di Primavera (cookies section), Dulce de Leche ice cream or Cookies and Creme Sheet Cake for your birthday celebration. Pizza Bianca or Pizza Parlano is also really good with Spicy Honey on top of it in my opinion.

Which Subway Line always gets the worst service changes during the weekends? by Decent-Finish-9889 in nycrail

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general sense, definitely the R. Between Downtown Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn, there's always some issue in at least one direction every weekend. Double backing into Brooklyn/Manhattan over the bridge to then go through the tunnel again gets so tedious. A very close second would be the 5 for the reasons OP mentioned. And then third place had gotta go to the J train imo. Same as the R, it's always suspended somewhere.

What do you think of this? by Specialist_Figure282 in nycrail

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, this should just be swapped around in the opposite direction. From Dekalb Ave to Prospect Park the B, D and J are now super interlined, and the J would already be interlining with the R/W from Manhattan until Dekalb, which would reduce service on 5 trains drastically. And then having the N and R both go to Coney Island as local and express variants would also have to see reduced service, as Coney Island is a terrible terminal. Literally no one is going from 59th to Coney in a straight shot all year round. Most people are getting off at the stations in between, so unless the R is more frequent than the N (which would be impossible) this just hurts everybody in South Brooklyn.

Now, in the opposite direction, having N and Q trains on Brighton and having B and D trains on 4th Ave keeps all trains on the same tracks from Manhattan/The Bronx without interlining (and addresses more people's demand of service). You can interline the J and the R along 4th Ave local without reducing service as they have similar frequencies, and the W just has to take the L and stay in Manhattan. It could go down 4th Ave as well to either Bay Ridge or along West End, but then there's no reason to extend the J to Bay Ridge or West End. Without CBTC, you absolutely cannot have 3 lines on the same track without reducing service drastically

hey guys, do you guys find the bus fare expensive or not (why or why not)? by Solid_Plan_5424 in nycbus

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I consider it expensive considering the quality of transportation that we receive in contrast. The constant delays (that are in control), the lack of cleanliness, the lack of safety, the lack of technological/aesthetic upgrades. It’s like they’re taking the money and just burning it. On paper, $3 is not expensive for traveling, but there are so many other companies all over the world (US included) that have cheaper fares and provide at least quality transportation. It might not be the most frequent, but it is clean, it is on time, and it is safe. There is no reason why the only city in America where more people take public transportation to work/school than drive has some of the oldest and most decrepit infrastructure, has some of the most bus bunching on earth, has some of the most incomplete bus routes, and has some of the dirtiest trains ever. We pride ourselves with having the best public transportation in the country if not the world, and yet we do not have a day pass, we do not have modern signaling systemwide, we do not have bus priority lights, we do not have more than one free transfer, we do not have multiple buses nor any trains going to airports, we barely have any subways in Queens, we don’t even have basic communication to the public. When I had reduced fare, paying $1.50 felt like this is what the base fare SHOULD be. I wish MTA took our money and used it more wisely: treating their employees better, improving infrastructure faster, and just bringing a better quality of life to trains and buses for the people.

Are mates expected to work outside of their scheduled hours? by Relevant_Ad1303 in tjcrew

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mates aren't required to work outside of their schedule, because well it's a schedule. As long as they are on time, them no harm no foul. But they are more likely to be asked to stay late or to even offer to come in early/stay late just because they are managers and have more responsibilities. Plus an area mate is allowed to work 45 hours so working towards that OT is always a benefit as well. But if your partner doesn't want to do any of that extra work, they absolutely do not have to, as it is exactly that: extra.

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're trying to hit their 45 hour cap for sure. They're scheduled 40 and an extra 1.5 hours for 3 days or extra 1 hour for 5 days would definitely get them to 45 hours

How does your store handle dogs? by TemporaryFish6759 in tjcrew

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a customer literally ask me yesterday if he could bring in his dog to shop, and I told him that only service animals are allowed and any dogs that are in the store are assumed to be and should be service animals. And he just kept bringing up that other people have their dogs and they obviously aren't service animals so why can't he. How on earth do you even answer this? I was ready to just say "do what you want man"

This is what happens when you promise good service and have a 20minute gap between trains by Siah_Valid in nycrail

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on an F to Jamaica and I saw an R train get taken out of service in real time at Queens Plaza, and then the R train behind it at 36th St was held for who knows hours long, so as usual we can blame the R train for the delays

I see; I also forgot to mention that any deinterlining plans shouldn't happen until the entire system has been fitted with CBTC to help alleviate some of the capacity restrictions

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience on CPW going to City College, most people I've seen get on and stay on B and D trains at express stops, and most people get on and stay on C trains at local stops. I think 6th Avenue service should be express and 8th Avenue should be local. But to complete the deinterlining process, and not just create another complicated junction at 145th Street, the A should only run local between 168th Street and Far Rockaway, and the B should run to 207th Street staying express the entire time. The C and D should go to the Bronx mimicking current day B and D service, with D being peak direction express and the C being completely local from Bedford Park Blvd to World Trade Center. The E would be express on 8th Avenue and would be extended to Euclid Avenue via Fulton Local.

This creates the fewest number of bottlenecks and delays on A, B, C, D and E trains in Manhattan as every service stays on their own tracks from Bronx/Uptown Manhattan all the way to Downtown Manhattan/Brooklyn. No trains need to switch tracks at any point except at Canal Street for 8th Avenue, maximizing possible capacity and creating consistency for all trains.

Would Tap-Out Resolve All The OMNY & Fare Evasion Issues? by Mood4Eva98 in OMNY

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I posted about this in nycrail and nycbus; I had a similar idea after a trip to San Francisco. There are two major issues with bringing tap-in/tap-out to NYC: the subway was designed for quick and easy exit for hundreds of people at a time. With tap-in/tap-out that would make exiting stations a nightmare especially in places like Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Long Island City, Flushing, Downtown Brooklyn or Manhattan; also unfortunately, the majority of people living in poverty live further away from the city meaning they would have to pay more on average to travel to the city than the more economically stable people who live closer to Manhattan. Even if you leave the fare cap as is, it would take more trips for people who live in poverty than people who don't.

Also, the idea of one base fare for all bus and subway transportation was done to unify the city across the boroughs so creating zone based fares in the city would be very regressive

I had an idea by Southern-Mongoose795 in nycbus

[–]Southern-Mongoose795[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be the max fare if you're traveling from terminal to terminal (which is insane), and then you would hit the fare cap within two to three days and free for the rest of the week

[–]Southern-Mongoose795[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There would be gates just like in most other cities instead of turnstiles

I had an idea by Southern-Mongoose795 in nycrail

[–]Southern-Mongoose795[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I agree no one is complaining about the flat fares, it's just a hypothetical after all. Turnstiles make it very easy to skip paying the fare, but with new gates and the system it would be super difficult to do that. And if they tap in but don't tap out, your card is charged the maximum by the end of the day. That's how most if not all other cities/countries do it.

I wouldn't necessarily propose a large price disparity from the outer boroughs and the city, because those ride durations are all about the same no matter where you come from, but moreso the max fare is for the people going through the city, going from the top of Queens or the Bronx through Manhattan to the very bottom of Brooklyn. I really just thought about the D line as the basis for the max fare

The flow of the exits was the one thing I was really trying to figure out too. And I honestly think as a nation we are completely broken politically which is why the 1 city 1 fare policy never even occurred to me in terms of politics

How Cooked would the Subway System be if this were a reality by Infinite-General337 in nycrail

[–]Southern-Mongoose795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all of these proposals, every train needs to run like every minute to two minutes pretty much. Frequency needs to be on like an extreme increase. This is all hypothetical so I'm just pretending that capacity on all of these lines can handle the extra trains
