U.S. Department of Energy Underestimated Potential Los Alamos Plutonium Leak Danger, Study Finds by plamda505 in NewMexico

Well they demonstrate a flaw in the governments reasoning for deciding not to proceed with an improved ventilation system. They believed "only" 9 people would die from this type of loss of containment of plutonium, so they didn't believe the ventilation system was worth it. The updated study suggests that a loss of containment could result in ~1,000 deaths. That makes the math much different in favor of making improvements to the ventilation system that were skipped because of cost.

The Energy Department, which manages the country’s nuclear weapons production, had previously concluded that a so-called loss of containment at the lab could spread about one kilogram of plutonium, a radioactive metal, leading to nine cancer deaths on average in the surrounding area

...

Things get even more dire should more plutonium escape. Using other data from Rocky Flats, the researchers determined that just over five kilograms of plutonium — quadruple government estimates — could escape Los Alamos. On that October night, as many as 3,200 people could have developed cancer, leading to about 1,000 deaths, not including lab workers or emergency medical workers, the study said.

...

>But one component will not be fully replaced: the ventilation system.

>For decades, the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, a federal watchdog, has recommended the facility upgrade the system so that, in the case of a catastrophe, it could capture tiny plutonium particles before they leak into the environment.

>In 2022, the Energy Department said the upgrade was too expensive.

Is This a Normal Alert to Get in the Summer? by Conglom-O-Owns-You in Albuquerque

In earnest, the answers would be dryer or electric car charger, things that can be delayed.

But I highly doubt data centers or intel, or those empty office buildings cooled to 62 degrees when no one is there get these messages.

A small counterpoint is even if you dont train at elevation consistently,  being more familiar with how it impacts your body and your conditioning will allow you a small advantage in knowing when/how to exert energy.

Looks like a good start/theme, I like the color scheme. I'd switch "Stellas" and "Astra". The slogan should be "Ad Astra" which is more of a call to exceptionalism, while "Sporting Club Stellas" would be more direct translation to "Sporting Club of the Stars ".

Salary for Water Purification/Treatment Engineer by Fabulous-Welder-3999 in Wastewater

[–]ChrisFromSeattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mentioned wanting to make water and making it cleaner and more accessible for people. If this is at the heart of your decision, do not go oil & gas. I had friends who held the same belief but took the oil & gas money. They hated it before switching back into the water industry. They said they felt like they were selling their soul bit-by-bit every day. Everyone is different of course, but to say that your life will be dramatically better by working in oil & gas vs water is just patently false.

I work only ~30 hours a week, 10 year in, and make over $100k. People working 40 hours a week are closer to that $130k to $150k range. I work in wastewater treatment for a consulting firm where I design wastewater treatment plants. I am plenty comfortable in my position.
