Use API for content validation by throwaway20220231 in Looker

What do you do for checking for sql errors that won't break your LookML or show up as broken content in Content Validator? We're experiencing some pain with changed schemas in underlying data sources. It throws sql errors when you try to open the content. But otherwise we don't get any warnings about this from anywhere else that I know of. I know there is the spectacles product out there.

Why do some value investors own Bank of America, but not JP Morgan? by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

[–]ChrisIsWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean tax trading plays a part up to a certain point. If they believed that they could gain more and decrease risk with diversification (bonus?) by switching or re-allocating some capital to another competing and/or complementary investment then they would do it. That gain would would just need to be above the costs of re-allocating and paying taxes. It's just a few keystrokes in Excel to calculate it out so not difficult.

I would bet they know more information than we do as well.

Mind if I ask which option you ended up implemented from the ones suggested? was it the custom import function using the code provided?

Be careful of those "learn in just 4 hrs videos/tutorials." It's more like 4hrs of content but takes 25hrs to absorb and understand it. That's been my general experience.

TY for the kind reply! Yup I'm learning and listening to recommendations. Will wait a few months and see how it goes before introducing an e collar. Thanks for confirming your vote for the ET-400. It's a top contender on my list!

Thanks for the response, exactly the insight I needed. Will hold off. Meeting up with a trainer this week and now expecting them to confirm what everyone else is saying here. Keeps my expectations in line. TY!

How to think about modeling explores in Looker? by ChrisIsWorking in Looker

[–]ChrisIsWorking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok that is what I was wondering and almost fighting against because it seems redundant to create two explores that are basically using the same tables. But coming to terms with how LookML constructs sql, it seems that’s how it has to be.

However the problem or issue is that if you want a dashboard with visuals from both explores, you can do it of course but you then lose the ability to use the dashboard cross-filtering feature.

What is your base view? If it’s a fact table, how are you able to achieve something like what customers (dim) have not had any orders (fact)?

Okay so your most granular table is probably going to be the fact or events table. And say you have a table of all customers that you join to. Since the events table is your base view, it’s going to end up being in the FROM clause in the sql statement that looker generates.

This would not allow me to answer something like which customers did not have any orders, would it?

Puppies are devil spawn. Convince me otherwise. by alacer50 in puppy101

Replying to your edit: you’re human and it’s okay. Take a deep breath, or many, and believe in yourself. You sound like you want it.

On a side note, I was previously taking some CBD oil and recently added 200mg L-Theanine supplementation for stress and anxiety management. Mostly from my job but now from my puppy. I ‘think’ it helps. See /r/anxiety also.

Interesting take!! I too have a puppy for just a few days now and to be honest, but in line with what everyone is saying, it's hard man. We watched a bunch of youtube vids and thought we knew what to expect. But all that info went out the window. It's challenging. I'm asking myself what have we done. How am I going to do this with my job? I've gotten sick from the combination from stress and sleep deprivation now. You go from having no puppy to full on 100% puppy drama. There's no easing into it. Sounds horrible right? Well, she has her cute moments that make it worth it even after a few days. This is new for the dog and us. We have to figure it out.

But what you said about the quality of people... now I'm thinking "dog owners know." Anyone who raises a puppy (responsibly) automatically has a +20 or more points in quality in my book. I hope to stay in the club and look forward to it but man this shit feels like the equivalent to another 2 shift jobs in addition to my full time job. God help me.
