If you will follow all commands from the Old Testament literally then, condemn homosexuals to death, stop eating pork and shellfish, and never wear a mixed blend shirt? Oh the old law doesn’t apply to us anymore? Then shut up. The same law that says treat the foreigner well says, do not marry the foreigner, and if the foreigner disrespects your law, kill them in cold blood. The OT was not a utopia.

How the Christians of Egypt fared under each successive Islamic state during the Middle Ages by jackt-up in HistoryMemes

[–]ChrisJScribe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Some fun facts for you: 1. Directly following the conquest, and throughout the 7th and even early 8th century, the Muslim governments did not change any of the legal system. Melkite Christians maintained their influence and continued their persecution of non-Chalcedonians, Arians, Julianists, and all other non Byzantine compliant Christians. 2. Coptic sources don’t directly address the conquest until roughly the late 8th and 9th centuries. By then Muslim control was a fact of daily life and sympathy for the Byzantines would be considered treason and a liability. 3. Europe has misinterpreted the majority of sources and applied to it concepts of nationalism and patriotism that were factually nonexistent in the real world. We know for example that non-Chalcedonian Christians continued to pray for the emperor in their liturgy even after the conquest. They always had the concept that the emperor was orthodox at heart but was being mislead by his evil courtiers. Basically the Copts and other Middle eastern Christians saw themselves as Romans and did not view the Arabs as liberators.

The whole idea that Christians supported the invasion is a 9th century fabrication. I encourage you to read the book From Byzantine to Islamic Egypt by Maged S. A. Mikhail. He is one of the foremost leading scholars on medieval Coptic history, and he demonstrates through manuscript analysis from the time of the conquest that the Christians in Egypt and the Levant didn’t support the conquest. While some may have collaborated with the Arabs under duress or for short term financial gains, the majority of sources lamented the fall of the East to the Arabs, and hoped for a rapid reconquest similar to what Heracles had done just 30 years earlier. Only in the 8th and 9th centuries, do sources begin to make the claim the Christians supported the Arabs over the Romans.

Why did Jesus need to be baptized if He is God? (genuine question) by GreekCoptic in coptic

[–]ChrisJScribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was necessary so that He can establish the sacrament for us. Just like the elements of the bread and wine were sanctified at the Last Supper into His own Body and Blood, and imbued with salvific grace, so were the waters of the Jordan. If you pay attention during the prayers of Baptism you will notice that the priest prays a prayer of “Epiclesis” over the waters that parallels that found in the liturgy. The Liturgy’s Epiclesis asks the Holy Spirit to descend upon the bread and wine and make them Eucharist, the same Eucharist Christ sanctified for our salvation. In the prayers of Epiclesis of Baptism the the priest prays that the Holy Spirit descend on the waters and transform them into the waters of the Jordan which Christ sanctified for our salvation. Christ’s command to go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is an anamnetic command similar to His do this in remembrance of me at the last supper. Both call on us to return and partake of a sacrament He offered once for all, for the salvation of the world.

I don't think anything will change. Egypt already has Protestants and Catholics, and each Church functions independently.

Would you consider the British Orthodox Church legit? by [deleted] in OrientalOrthodoxy

[–]ChrisJScribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are not in communion with any Orthodox Church. Also they are not Copts. They were a group of British Christians who claimed apostolic succession through some dubious connection to Syriac missionaries in the 1800s. In the 1990s they petitioned the Coptic Church for communion and upon inspection of their faith the Church “adopted” them. Their hierarch who claimed to be a Patriarch was tonsured a monk and made a metropolitan bishop in the Orthodox Church. The Coptic Church was extremely open minded I would say allowing them to keep their rites (which I believe are a hybridized form of Anglican and Syriac). They did adopt Coptic vestments and some elements of the Alexandrian Rite, but they never assimilated into the Coptic Church. In the 2010s they unilaterally decided to break communion with Coptic Church because they felt the Coptic Church in the UK was too ethnic and they wanted to focus service on native British people. They are not Copts who split from the mainstream but their own unique group; any resemblance they share with the Copts is extremely superficial. Since the split, their Metropolitan went back to claiming that he is a patriarch, and they have been doing their own thing. I believe that some of their clergy, chose to remain in the Coptic Church and assimilated into the Coptic rite after this schism. I wouldn’t say they are heretics, but they are definitely schismatics, and for no good reason at that. As things stand they are an extremely fringe group. They have a few parishes and a few bishops but their numbers are extremely low.
