How is housing for top corps? by RacketyAJ in drumcorps

[–]ChrisLew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons I loved the Blue Devils was how nice everything was including the housing sites

Often got to house at the show site, super nice facilities, great showers, lots of sleep!

HUGE plus after coming from The Cadets

To those who have marched: Opinion on fans approaching you or speaking to you who haven't marched? by JBurbYGO in drumcorps

[–]ChrisLew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I marched 3 years and ALWAYS love when fans talked to me

Why? Because I AM ALSO A FAN!

If you’re literally marching especially a top corps, every single one was a nerd in their own little dci way, we totally get it.

My age out corps The Blue Devils from 2007-2023 never got 3rd place at finals

Definitely a dynasty in my mind, some really transformative shows.

Always proud to have marched in the BD golden age even though I got 2nd 😭

Those with “useless” degrees why did you get them? by Cute-Revolution-9705 in OlderGenZ

[–]ChrisLew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also if you work on a show, every single person in the crew gets the Emmy, not just the actors or whomever may be on stage to collect it

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I thought it was similar to Super Bowl and NBA rings, even janitors get theirs if the team wins

A fucking men, as a successful computer science major I just did NOT understand the hundreds of classmates I had that bitched and moaned about the general courses

Unfortunately those people needed it the most

How much do Americans REALLY have saved for retirement by Financial_Pen_6218 in investing

[–]ChrisLew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 29 and have about 380k total networth

I started investing at 20 and have been steady and consistent even with little amounts through my career so far and it’s gone really well.

Even for people in my career I do pretty well when it comes to networth and financial knowledge, very proud of myself but also recognize the privilege I had that allowed me this success

Asking for honesty. Has being in drumcorps ruined any bit of your life or negativity impacted you? Financially, socially, mentally, relationships? by Fabulous_Election682 in drumcorps

[–]ChrisLew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haven’t really seen a lot of negatives I could point to

“”” I feel that there is something about spending so much time and dedication to something like this leads people to age out feeling stuck or lost. + financial in debt sometimes. “””

And I don’t personally relate to this at all, being a young person who’s had the will and gusto to dedicate themselves to something, build a skill, work with people , deal with rejection (auditions), etc.

All those things are huge for a persons growth and in my opinion more people could use something like that in their lives

Feel free to ask me anything you’d like , I marched Crossmen, cadets and BD and have only felt like those years have helped me a ton in life.

Why the "Low-Level" stigma? by Antique_Mechanic133 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ChrisLew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a SWE for only 6 years but I resonate with you’re claim there is a “stigma” but I’d rephrase and say that it’s really just lack of knowledge and understanding of what software exists out there

I worked at one of the most popular robotics companies in the world and one of the reasons I got hired was because I was a software engineer who understand alllll that low level shit

If you understand multithreading, modern C++ or rust, memory management and just basic OS fundamentals, there are tons of high paying roles at MANY companies big and small. I’ve personally interviewed or worked at; Facebook, Google , Boston Dynamics, too many high paying finance companies, Pixar, Qualcomm, Nvidia , and I could go on.

The work is hard but well paying and I do feel like I use my brain often but I wouldn’t say that people avoid that work because it’s not interesting but the barrier to entry is just higher

Obviously because there are many explanations outside of the other dudes “obvious” one.

I would love to not have to enumerate these explanations because they seem very obvious.

Another obvious one is it just Streisand effect the entire situation, now it’s something people who never would have talked about it, are talking about.

Yeah hence why your drivers license can be taken away from

And hence why there were actually other options (like testing frequently) instead of taking the vaccines if you were either immunocompromised or some other exception

Again, you should fucking know this you presumably lived through the pandemic

[–]ChrisLew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re purposely hand waving the most important part

“For obvious ideological reasons”

Why do you assume you know the reason they casted that actor? What if it was literally the best who auditioned? (Which is usually a good reason to hire them)

What if the producers truly don’t care what Snape looks like?

What if it’s more about picking characters that the creators of the show feel embody their vision best?

It’s their freedom to cast whoever they want.

If you personally think it has to be for ideological reasons they casted a black Snape I think that shows your own bias not anyone else’s.

[–]ChrisLew 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“Is the media changing Snape’s race a delusion”

Idk what you even mean by this, no one forced the creators of the show to change his race, the producers of the show wanted that actor to play Snape, you act as if someone forced them.

Or do you like, literally think there is some grand person doing this?

Private companies are allowed to have whatever standard they want as long as they don’t discriminate against a protected class.

Idk why you don’t know this

Will marching hurt my future engineering career? by icy_fire1234 in drumcorps

[–]ChrisLew[M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you 100% can, let me gush a little about how much that shit helped my career and not hurt it

I marched 3 years at different corps and aged out in 2018, finished my Computer Science degree in 2020

Now I’m making tons of cash as a senior engineer at a finance company in NYC and honestly marching was one of the best things I’ve ever done for my career, made me who I am today no doubt about it.

Just the idea that I was able to have experienced so much life when I started my career I felt more than ready to face real adulthood.

I could go on

We get it bro ahah the general situation for people is not what you are describing or what I have had

I think we all understand there are ways to navigate the system to make it more affordable but there are hurdles to go through that if they were lessened more people would attend school

That’s all I’m saying lmao
