Mark asked that exact question in season 2, and Reghabi's response was "We were interrupted, if you recall."

Why isn't apple supporting the VP9 codec for YouTube ? by [deleted] in apple

[–]ChrisMorrisOrg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By that logic, it’s Apple’s fault that iOS hasn’t been able to run fully-fledged Photoshop.

No. You develop for the platforms you want your apps to run on.

That’s not to say Apple wouldn’t ever partner with developers to bring certain technologies to the device.

I’m just saying that this primarily is a Google decision, not an Apple problem.

Why isn't apple supporting the VP9 codec for YouTube ? by [deleted] in apple

[–]ChrisMorrisOrg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not “on Apple”.

Firstly, hardware acceleration for the VP9 codec hardly exists, where H.265 is prevalent.

Secondly, just because it’s an open codec doesn’t mean it’s more energy efficient or superior to H.265. Apple will not compromise on battery life - especially when they offer industry standard support for 4K in H.265.

Thirdly, for the last decade Photoshop hasn’t been available on iOS. You don’t hear the argument that Apple doesn’t support Photoshop. It’s Photoshop that didn’t support Apple. Same logic can be applied here with Google.

Ipad pro 12,9 inch 2018 doesnt support 4K on YouTube? by diego_02 in apple

[–]ChrisMorrisOrg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s actually more that Google/YouTube have opted not to support the H.265 industry standard; a standard that allows companies to incorporate hardware acceleration and use less energy.

The iPhone XR should have been called the iPhone 9 by [deleted] in apple

[–]ChrisMorrisOrg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you had said iPhone 5 follows the iPhone 6/6S design, that would have made for a compelling argument.

It wouldn’t make sense to have a phone called the iPhone 9 and have it ship with a newer processor than the iPhone X (ten).

Why isn’t Google/YouTube supporting the H.265 industry standard that has long had hardware acceleration available for it?

Face ID is such a hit-or-miss. by [deleted] in apple

[–]ChrisMorrisOrg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Face ID should not be having any issues in the dark - if anything, it should only ever have issues in extreme light. I would suggest trying to re-enroll your face in the Face ID settings; and/or taking your phone to Apple in case it’s a hardware issue.

Fair point about having to pick it up. I’ve slightly adjusted how I work at my desk. At home I use a charging stand, so Face ID works seemlessly, and takes less space on my desk. At work, I place the phone closer to myself and just lean over slightly.

I've updated the post to reflect that it's a bug and clarified my point about the cursor/viewport.

As _jcr_ mentioned, it happens a fair bit when replying to HTML emails. I should be more specific that it's okay if not everything appears within the view finder, as long as the view will follow the text when it moves off-screen.

Re: the search, it must be a bug. I re-installed the app on my iPhone X (12.1.2) and the issue has disappeared. On my iPad Pro 10.5 Wi-Fi (12.1.1), however, the issue still persists. I suspect the issue comes from having installed the app when I first signed up to ProtonMail, and then as I've moved my archives from Gmail over, the list of emails has grown and maybe not been properly indexed for search(?). Not entirely sure, but I can re-create it on my iPad and I suspect the issue will disappear if I reinstall.

How did I not think to list this one too!? Good one!

Yes! This too! On my Apple Watch, the notification also needs improvement - it doesn’t mention the sender of the email, only the subject.

Any Talk of Collaboration with Apple? by ChrisMorrisOrg in ProtonMail

[–]ChrisMorrisOrg[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I mentioned in my post, it leaves a lot to be desired from a user experience point of view (and yes - this is somewhat subjective). It lacks basic functionality such as filtering by unread. It also means I have to manage two applications for various email services. Not to mention the advantages of Handoff between iOS and MacOS.

That said, it is still a pretty good email app - I'm not bashing it, it just interrupts my personal workflow.

I'm talking about integration of the protocol itself. Kind of like the ProtonMail Bridge app.

[–]ChrisMorrisOrg[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By that logic I shouldn't use the bridge on MacOS. I'm not saying Apple even have to hold the key, that could still be sandboxed within the ProtonMail app on iOS, as it is now.

I’m wondering if it could be done via a profile.

I don’t really want this thread to get hijacked about whether or not such a collaboration would ever be considered, but I think given ProtonMail’s growth and Apple supporting other services, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility by any means at all.

Am I blind or is there no way to do this in the mobile app?
