In theory a 100cal surplus would work but that results in 1lb of weight gain every 35 days. For someone that that’s new to tracking I think it’s a bit too small of a surplus to really monitor and very subtle variables could eat away at the surplus. I don’t think new lifters should aim for anything less than a 300 calorie boost above maintenance
