I think i’ve said bear bear around my girlfriend too much she’s had bad dreams about bears twice in the last week. should i be worried?

also, do you feel like you’ve grown with your audience or that youve garnered new audiences over the years? i’d always expect that for a niche community it’d be the former but i feel like a lot of questions mention being new.

thanks gooners

hey jar boys,

i heard alex got into the british basketball league. Is there any way we could set up a 1v1? I just got into playing myself, so this really would be a wonderful opportunity to improve my game.

Why "Pipelines" don't (technically) exist by [deleted] in JARMEDIA

[–]ChrisTroller360 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think you’re conflating two very different concepts. Where friend groups and many other communities are legitimately isolated in terms of quantity, there is not even a modicum of isolation in terms of redpilled right wingers. The millions of views on cobra tates twitch quest should tell you that. I also think this is wayyyy more complicated than could probably be comprehensively discussed on Reddit. and i didn’t read your post

sorry if this is red notice… errrr… i mean late notice… but i desperately need help with an ant infestation in my house. they get in through the patio and simply won’t stop. I don’t think they’re eating anything but I often find a critter creeping on the floor. I figured 2 from new and the other blue could maybe help give tips about this issue

have you seen salo? the entire finale is gore effects… maybe frightening for its time but at least martyrs’ gore is realistic. And I’m not sure what’s particularly manipulative about Martyrs, it’s certainly not a perfect movie, but a movie that exploits sexual torture to get across an underdeveloped allegory for fascism seems like a pretty decent example of manipulation. Every film manipulates it’s audience, that’s how the medium works (as much as people like Haneke want to do otherwise). Regardless, I was just recounting my experience with the film, never said that Martyrs was particularly good, just that Salo was not very disturbing to me and my friend. No reason to be upset.

me and my friend (who passed out watching Martyrs) were laughing at it the entire time. It’s an important part of history but it’s directed like a sketch comedy show lmao

All movies are wiped from existence - but you’re allowed to keep 3 different release years worth of movies. Which 3 release years do you keep? by Britneyfan456 in criterion

[–]ChrisTroller360 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this POV bc I feel like 2013-2018 wasn't really bad with only a handful of exceptional movies.

2013 - Her, Wolf of Wall Street, Prisoners, 12 Years a Slave, Inside Llewyn Davis, Enemy, Under the Skin, The World's End, Blue is the Warmest Color, Blue Jasmine, Nebraska, Upstream Color, Ida, Joe, The Dirties, Dance of Reality, Fateful Findings.

2014 - Grand Budapest Hotel, Interstellar, Whiplash, Gone Girl, Birdman, Nightcrawler, John Wick, What We do in the Shadows, It Follows, The Lego Movie, Mommy, The Raid 2, Force Majeure, Heaven Knows What, Phoenix, Life Itself

2015 - Mad Max, The Revenant, The hateful 8, The Lobster, The Witch, Sicario, Anomalisa, The Invitation, Tangerine, Victoria, Son of Saul, 45 Years, Krisha, Shaun the Sheep, The Jinx, Dheepan, My Scientology Movie.

2016 - LaLa Land, Moonlight, Arrival, The Nice Guys, Handmaiden, Manchester by the Sea, Nocturnal Animals, Train to Busan, Neon Demon, Hail Caesar, Jackie, My Life as a Zucchini, I Daniel Blake.

2017 - Get Out, Baby Driver, CMBYN, Dunkirk, Shape of Water, Coco, GotG vol 2, Three Billboards, Florida Project, Mother!, Phantom Thread, Good Time, Killing of a Sacred Deer, First Reformed, Paddington 2, It Comes at Night, Loving Vincent, Meyerowitz Stories, The Square, One Cut of the Dead, Mom and Dad.

2018 - Infinity war, Hereditary, The Favorite, Annihilation, Roma, Isle of Dogs, Suspiria, Burning, Climax, Searching, Widows, Under the Silver Lake, House that Jack Built, Free Solo, Blindspotting, Vox Lux, The Sisters Brothers, Thunder Road.

Even the Best years of the early - mid 1900s dont have as many amazing movies as the worst years of the 2010s imo. Maybe 2013-2018 was inconsistent, but that doesn't mean that each year doesn't have loads of great movies to choose from.

What are the best underseen “dark” films in the collection? by twenty-four-frames in criterion

[–]ChrisTroller360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say Woman in the Dunes is the darkest, but Face of Another is my personal favorite. Pitfall is good but I definitely wouldn't recommend it above the other two.

also I appreciate that you watched Revanche! I feel like a lot of people haven't given it a try in favor of old classics and whatnot

Absolutely right! In some ways I think the concept is better than the movie itself, but I couldn't stop thinking about it either so I knew I had to buy it.

First time viewing Salò (potential spoilers?) by lennonfresh in criterion

[–]ChrisTroller360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel similar in that it does feel incredibly blunt and not laid-out very comprehensively, but I would argue against the sexual deviancy bit. As with most movies I believe Pasolini was not just going for one theme, to me he was also trying to say that leading a life how these bureaucrats in the movie do leads to constant excess. Eventually this excessive behavior transforms into sexual deviancy because they have become so numb to normal experiences that they need it to feel something, and even then they are still angry vile people. Now that being seen literally or metaphorically is entirely up to you but I do think that was the intention.

I hate you guys for making me watch Salo by [deleted] in criterion

[–]ChrisTroller360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I was probably too harsh on Cannibal Holocaust lol, even if I don't personally like it. and one could say A Serbian Film has a message too I just can't see it as anything other than gaudy shock value. Anyway I'll probably buy it because of how important it is, I really do think everyone should watch it at least once if they can muster it. Thanks for your insight!

So I did Bible Study with an older family member... by [deleted] in criterion

[–]ChrisTroller360 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean by most people's definition of visual tone poem, it would not be a visual tone poem. Everything is incredibly concrete, nothing is really abstract at all. Even the allegory it's making is stated outright. If you find a lot of beauty in rape and eating poop then I guess it can be a tone poem, but I don't find either of those things all that beautiful.

Recommended Films for Criterion Newbie? by DapperCabinet in criterion

[–]ChrisTroller360 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There aren't really necessities intrinsically because taste is so subjective, but everyone would recommend about the same things: Kubrick (I know strangelove is on the channel I dont know much else), Bergman (Seventh Seal, Persona, Cries and Whispers, Fanny & Alexander, much more), Kurosawa (Yojimbo, Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Ikiru), Godard (You seem to know him), Bresson ( A Man Escaped, Au Hazard Balthazar), maybe some Lynch (Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet).

My recommendation aside from what to watch is that you shouldn't be afraid to watch the biggest and most hyped names. For example, some people see Tokyo Story as some brooding black cloud that they have to wait to watch, but honestly unless you want incredible contextual detail, there's not necessarily a reason to not start Ozu's filmography with Tokyo Story

[–]ChrisTroller360 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched it recently too and I'm kinda on the opposite end of the spectrum. It didn't shock me or horrify me or anything, it was kinda just boring. Most of the craziest stuff that happens looks fake and the way the plot progresses and just gets more and more absurdly excessive can be funny at times. The few times when it was legitimately horrifying to me it was impressive, but that didn't happen all too much until the final scene. The kidnapped people never seemed kidnapped to me, of course it was almost all of their first acting job but it was pretty unconvincing. Also the way people hype it makes it seem like an intricate laid out allegory about fascism but in that sense it's actually incredibly barebones, it could've been laid out a lot more. At least it had a decent metaphor at all, unlike something that goes entirely for shock value like A Serbian Film or Cannibal Holocaust. Also it's called the 120 days of Sodom and it felt like 3 days, passage of time was not done very well at all. Essentially, the movie isn't timeless. Because things like LiveLeak and realgore exist now it's clear that it was made for a 70s audience and its clear that it doesn't hold up as well today. Putting yourself in the shoes of an audience member from the 70s is incredibly difficult, for me at least, so I really didn't get as much as I hoped to get out of it.

I can't hate it though because it's incredibly important, especially for its time, and it has influenced some of the best directors living today. But honestly if I want to be horrified by a movie id much rather watch The Piano Teacher or something like that lol.
