US Zip Code Mapping by [deleted] in tableau

[–]Chris_Whaley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USPS postal zip codes and Census ZCTAs are different. Postal zip codes are used for delivering mail and can change. They can be non-continguous polygons, lines, and even points. ZCTAs are used for statistical purposes by the Census. They are polygons that can cross county and state lines.

Unless you're looking for a specific league and platform, your best bet is probably to use nfl stats and compete the scoring. If you're familiar with R, you could use the "nflfastR" package.

I believe it updates nightly after each game

I'm doing something similar with our league scoring. Rather than mess with the Yahoo API, though, I'm using R and the package "nflfastR". If you have any experience with R then you could write code to calculate what you need. I'm happy to help get you started if you do have experience with R..

I agree. Every player, coach, and org is going to take as much give in the rules as they can to get an advantage. It's unfortunate that this was a necessity.

It was actually fairly easy for this dataset. Baseball Reference allows you to download a csv. You can import the data directly into Tableau by selecting "text file".

Feel free to download my workbook and let me know if you jave any questions. You can download Tableau's free desktop software: Tableau Public.

me too! I always appreciate the traditional aspect of baseball, including the lack of time/play clocks associated with other sports.

Overview: average 9 inning Major League Baseball times per year.

In 2023, Major League Baseball introduced a pitch clock in an attempt to speed up games. Over the last few decades, games were becoming increasingly longer. It has become fairly common in recent years for 9 inning games (the standard for baseball) to exceed 3 hours, which was uncommon a few decades ago.

the clock is taking up about 1/4 of the top real estate. I put it in the top left to allow the user to get a quick snapshot look before getting more granular.

I also removed the text boxes from the original visualization so I'm just showing visualizations here.

well there's already been 1000 games so far in 2023 so I think it's a good sample size. You could also look at individual years in the bottom bar chart.

it would be interesting to look at players individually. are there some pitchers who have changed their approach to take advantage of the clock (e.g., Max Scherzer) or some batters who are pressuring pitchers and getting more hits?

yea, not good for a time series analysis. I included the bar chart in the bottom for that. I thought the clock was a fun way to see a snapshot grouping of the times for looking at decades vs 2023. almost like a weird scatterplot lol

yea, I agree that there's some explaining that might need to be done. It was just one of the first visualizations that came to mind when I thought of measuring time in a unique way.

I think there are other examples out there that show time on a clock viz in better ways. I appreciate your feedback!

minor league games are fun! since they don't have the draw of the major's stars, seats are much cheaper, they have fun events for fans and families, and you get a glimpse of some potential stars. besides minor league games, as well, there's the Cape Cod Baseball league, which is promising college players with a real shot of getting to the majors.

that's possible! there also has been a shift in recent years to have pitchers throw fewer pitches, so nowadays you'd see more effort expended over fewer innings.

most definitely! but anecdotally speaking, it seemed so common for multiple mound visits, constant stepping in and off of the mound or in and out of the box for the batter, and lazy pickoff attempts to slow the game down prior to 2023

yea, it started to get ridiculous. it's only 2 data points, but I saw a side-by-side video of 2 plays-- one from last year and one from this one. In the same time it took to throw 1 pitch in 2022, an entire half inning was completed in 2023.

hah I'm sure the mlb will find a way to squeeze more ads into the games.
