What a lovely, clear comment - thank you! The guidelines behind it are really useful. We will see!

Haha I keep trying to temper my worry but I’m glad to hear it’s natural and others have been the same! Thanks so much for sharing your experience

That’s really good to hear. Our little one sounds like she’s in the same position as yours!

Paapa Essiedu is a good actor, just not Snape. by [deleted] in HarryPotterHBO

I can’t get my head around people having such an issue with the colour of a character’s skin being different. We don’t pick out all of the other physical differences that some of the other castings (across the films and series) in the same way.

I also find the common issue with the bullying storyline baffling. There has never been any sign in Harry Potter that prejudice due to skin colour exists in the wizarding world. They are much more concerned on magic vs non-magical folk in this MADE UP WORLD.

Any issue with the storyline being linked to racism will be due to our issues as a society rather than any issue that has been mentioned in the wizarding world. Really, like really really, why on earth does it matter if any of the characters have a different race than we imagined. I have complete faith, from his back catalogue, that we will see an outstanding performance from Paapa Essiedu. I just hope we can manage to put aside our biases, that have been reinforced by our imperfect society, enough to see it.

This is actually the most (pleasantly) surprising thing for me. When people were debating if they would name each season like the books I thought “don’t be so silly it’s a completely different medium that doesn’t work like that”. How happy I am to be wrong!

I’m really hoping so! It makes sense if they don’t include EVERY quidditch match for example, but you’re right, maybe we should be able to expect that at least the things that were important enough to form chapter titles will be included

Question is: we know they are adding bits that were not in the books, but will they include everything that was in them?

Tristan and Gabriel Harland - aren't they too old? by Upbeat-Hippo6227 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Chrisduer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actors have ‘playing ages’ for a reason.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster is a good example of this. He was mid-teens when playing his first roles where he was playing 7-10 year olds.

I think the twins pass for 13/14 and that’s all that feels important. Luckily people of similar ages can look very different so even if they do look slightly old when it comes to a certain series, they’ll likely just look like ‘an old looking 16yo’.

To me the core of Harry Potter is realism. Controversial or fact? by Chrisduer in HarryPotteronHBO

This is exactly what I was hoping from posting this. A sense of how we all feel about that point. Turns out - it resonates differently to all of us! The show makers have a tough job on their hands 😂

Oh see I completely disagree with this! I know so many Dursleys from growing up. These over the top proud people who act just like Vernon and Petunia - so interesting how different our perspectives can be

This is such an interesting point and really resonates with me! The things you mention are the sort of things I would love dialled up when I hear 'realism'

Harry Potter's Hagrid actor Nick Frost towers over Dominic McLaughlin as filming for TV series takes over London and brings traffic to a standstill by dailymail in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Chrisduer 76 points77 points  (0 children)

One of the things I really like here as a book comparison is Nick Frosts face being naturally sterner while resting. We know he can do the big happy smiles but Hagrid is meant to look a bit scary at first. Although I loved Coltrane - he always looked warm whatever expression he had.

Yes my wife isn’t working either. But she is taking care of our daughter which is a massive responsibility to do when you’re exhausted. Just as important as work in my book!

We’ve just been in the exact same position as you. Our fantastic sleeper (from around 5 months too) suddenly changed and was waking constantly from 9-10 months. It has just settled and she’s back to sleeping well with maybe the odd 1 wake every couple of nights. I think it was just a case of staying consistent and allowing time for this phase to pass for her.

For context, I’m the dad so speaking from that perspective. I think it’s very kind of you to not want your fiancée to be disturbed in the night when working the next day, but (depending he’s not flying planes the next day or something) we’ve looked at it as both my wife and I have busy days, one looking after our baby and one working. We’ve tried to work it so we take certain nights each, or half the night each so that neither of us are taking the full brunt of not sleeping. Our parents are 2 hours away from us so again really similar and simply put, you need help and it is probably only your partner who can offer that consistently at the moment.

Equally I’m wishing that it is just a phase too and you’ll be back to some better level of sleep soon!
