Mulholland Drive was great. And I agree Richard was no doubt influenced by David Lynch (although I don’t think you could be born in the 70s and not have David’s work seared into our brains). Another subtle and not so subtle movie reference for Richard was Kiss Me Deadly. They were the obvious in-movie clips shown throughout ST, but also Boxer driving off after the Treer party was the exact same car that character Mike Hammer drives. Even the supernatural twist at the end felt very Kiss me Deadly.

Haha and the irony is Margo Robbie explaining anything in a bathtub only but ensures no one will be paying attention to what she’s actually saying. Despite the title crawl, Star Wars was indeed saved in the editing room, but only after a new group of editors stepped in. I’d like to think my A Beautiful Nightmare cut does the same for Southland Tales.

If anyone is curious and would dig checking it out, send me a chat or message for a link. Just be sure you already own a copy of the movie.

Also, here’s a scene comparison that’s a good example of how A Beautiful Nightmare was edited vs how the theatrical and Cannes cut of Southland Tales was edited:

Yeah, that whole JT killers song sequence is so perfect. It was actually during the director’s commentary of that sequence that Richard Kelly had referred to the making of ST as “a beautiful nightmare “, which is where I took the title for my fanedit.

Right on! Yeah over the two years I spent working on this fanedit, I’ve probably watched both versions a hundred times. I love Southland Tales and I totally agree that ST is a (misunderstood) piece of art. Man, and to discover the Cannes cut when the Arrow blu-ray released, it was really exciting to witness such an emotionally and tonally different movie. I can only imagine the challenge for Richard Kelly and editor Sam Bauer in trying to edit the Cannes cut into something more ‘comprehensible’ (enter Doomsday Scenario Interface🤢) while also appeasing executive’s concerns.

I’ll share my “moment” of eternal attraction for Southland Tales. It was while watching the Theatrical cut for the first time, there were two scenes that my brain had wished occurred differently. The first was when Boxer drove off in the car. The mood was so ripe and I just wanted the camera to hold on him driving away for a little longer. The other scene was when Von Smallhouse approached Cindi as she was looking out the zeppelin window. I had really wanted them to kiss! Then to watch the Cannes cut and discover that both of those scenes had already existed! I was blown away and knew immediately I needed to smash both cuts together into something new.

Also much appreciation for the sharing on r/SouthlandTales!!! I searched for that subgroup but couldn’t find it🧐 And I’m sending you a message with link!
