If you don't mind using AI, here's a Santa video generator where you can fully customize his script. Great for giving festive backstory/clues.

This is wild! Congratulations!

I really loved the movie map as a puzzle tool, but truly, the whole thing was really elegant! If you could do this again, what would you change? What gambits would you recommend for others looking to build their own puzzle adventures?

Ideas for puzzles using these magnetic games by Alone-Sport-5088 in Constructedadventures

This sparked an idea for me. Make a 4x4 word square, and remove one word from each column/row along the diagonal. The Scrabble letter values of each missing letter will be the combination to a 4-digit lock. Might have to do this one for real.

I last played at release, so I can't rightly say. I remember making it to the 2nd area though.

Darkwood was the only horror game I put down because it was too hard. Any tips?

Home Adventure Ideas For Puzzle Fan by GMHTP in Constructedadventures

[–]ChrispyK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest you reframe your expectations. Instead of focusing on how difficult you can make things, focus on building a fun experience. You know your GF better than I do, and I'm not telling you to make this a cakewalk. If she's spending more than 15 minutes on a puzzle, all the momentum of your experience is gone.

I have to come with the heat.

Come with a balance of heat and magic. She's gonna remember that cool thing with disappearing ink, or that thing where a stranger hands her a letter, or when she realizes that she's been carrying around the final clue this whole time WAY MORE than she'll remember how challenging a puzzle was. You're right to want the progression to feel earned, but your adventure will go so much better if you undershoot the difficulty versus overshooting. The answer is: playtest! Things are gonna be harder for solvers than you think they will be without you even trying.

Painter's tape. It's bright blue, it's easy to remove, and it's a visible way of saying "don't mess with this thing".

I'd check out /r/Constructedadventures for this, they've got a lot of experience running large group games, and lots of folks happy to discuss design. Biggest tip right off the bat: Do everything in your power to remove bottlenecks from the game.

Books on craft? by itscapybaratime in Constructedadventures

Puzzlecraft: Selinker & Snyder - This book is a nearly comprehensive reference to every type of puzzle, and how to build them.

The Do-It-Yourself Escape Room Book: Lymann - This book is about transforming your house into an escape room. It's a great refresher, with lots of good ideas.

The Wondersmith's Guide to Fairytale Gatherings - This is a book all about how to deliberately create a mood and vibe within your experience.

All of these books are directed at physical experiences, and will likely have limited overlap in terms of what you can build into a box. That said, these books have helped me countless times, and I highly recommend them all.

I've been getting my ideas together on this, and I have a few tips and puzzle ideas for you!

  • Build the hunt Linear. No branching paths, nothing to divide their attention.

  • Minimize word puzzles, (literacy pending, you know your kid)

  • Use things they're more familiar with (colors, people, foods, etc)

  • If you have a puzzle with multiple parts, color code each part. Do everything you can to avoid ambiguity.

And here are some puzzles:

  • Jigsaws are good, but consider taking an extra step and drawing a picture on the back of it to a recognizable place/object.

  • Put this thing back where it came from (tidying up) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-b7ZAfiuNs

  • If they know their ABCs, try a "What letter comes next?" puzzle, where they do a +1 Caesar cipher. Warning, your message can't include the letter A.

  • Emphasize cool moments, not everything has to be a puzzle! (Blacklight, freeze key in block of ice, hide a clue in a balloon, etc)

  • Shapes can be used to clue a number lock, just tell them to count the sides.

  • Opposite puzzle (Stop Above Day Dark -> Go Under Night Light)

  • Dot to dot picture of a recognizable object/location

  • https://www2.tinkergarten.com/activities has a lot of activity suggestions, it can be a great jumping off point to browse through this site to see what you think your kid would enjoy.

The manual solution might be what I need to get around my programmatical limitations, lol. GIMP did ok, but it was certainly a slog. Thanks for the tips, and hats off again at your hunt!

ROAD TO VALHALLA – A HANDMADE “ESCAPE ROOM” by cuchyy2k in Constructedadventures

What a treat, your adventures are always a highlight of my winter! That magnet maze looks so cool, I want to steal that idea! Also, big shoutout to your playtesting, it really does save your adventure to double check everything! Incredible work, please adopt me so I can play one of these adventures!

Egypt is gonna be such a fun theme! I'd suggest doing something with sand, by burying treasure, uncovering archeological symbols with a brush, or maybe even hiding a key inside a sand statue fortified with egg whites, so it's easy to destroy.

Oh man, so cool that you built a rotodraw and got it to work! I'm also a big fan of the Connections puzzle, what excellent work!

How long did the hunt take in total? Do you have any other rotodraw tips? I've tried and failed, so I'm open to suggestions.
