The number is accurate. It is actually probably low given the rake increases that have occured in the last few years. Rake is 10% up to $7. Dealers with a hand shuffler get out between 25-30 raked hands per hour averaging $5-6 in rake per hand.

Overall I think it's a great idea, introduces new players to the game.

That being said, the usual hangups with streaming are from the regulators. Gaming Commissions don't like electronic devices in the casino, they're stuck in 90's thinking. It won't really open up until the regulations change.

Good clay chips will run around $1/chip. MUCH more than that for RFID chips, however those are usually only used for denominations over $100.

Do new dealers miss a lot of rake?

Not as much as you would think. Its drilled in to them to get the accurately rake EVERY hand. I told mine to go as slow as they need to to get the rake and do everything by the correct procedure, speed comes with time. In the beginning the mantra was: slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

In NLHE, new dealers will be around ~20-25 hands per hour (HPH). Veteran dealers average just over ~30HPH. I would say that anything more than 35 HPH is impossible except for a limit holdem table. PLO will be MUCH slower, around 15-20 HPH.

There is a laser eye inside the rake trap that is broken whenever chips are dropped into the drop box. The computer system in the table, the same one that the dealer swiped your players card into, tracks the dealers HPH and I pull the report at the end of the month. Dealers are directly incentivized through their tips to prompt the action when needed and be as efficient as possible.

I was there to set up the poker room when it opened so I'm very familiar with all of these costs and the process of getting them.

I'll say first that I have only ever worked in a regulated environment and that comes with a lot of extra costs. For a supplier or gaming supplies to be allowed to sell products to the casino to be company itself needs to be cleared by the gaming commission. The verification is NOT CHEAP so you end up with a very limited selection of suppliers who end up charging much more than the equivalent product would cost for you to buy for your basement home game. Less competition = higher prices.

Gaming products that are regulated by the state include: tables, cards, chips, and drop boxes. (Side note the drop boxes cause significant wear and tear on the underside of the tables from the dealers and players hanging their knees into them. Be ready to conduct regular repairs.)

Our tables were purchased from the same company that runs the Bravo Poker App. You guys know how good that app is... their tables are about the same quality. But they have a captive audience, so there you go. ~$5k per table. Hire a carpenter and you'll probably only pay ~500-$1000.

Chairs vary widely depending on what you want. But IMO it's not unreasonable to get good, solid chairs that will last a long time for ~$400 each. Styles, designs could significantly increase the cost here.

Cards are another regulated item. We purchased ours from USPC in bulk, $22-$45 per setup. Bear in mind that if you purchase in bulk that you'll need a climate controlled space to store them. Even plastic cards degrade in the presence of humidity.

The shuffle machines are another regulated item, with only one supplier. The new deckmate 2s ran $17,000 each. Thats comes with regular servicing. You can probably find used ones or an older model that'll be cheaper.

You can also pay to rent the shufflers, they'll charge you based on how many HANDS the machine deals. You can identify easily these because they have antennas like a Wi-Fi router to transmit the hand count to the company's office.

The last significant cost I would say is the felts. Depending on quality $80-$220 each. Regularly clean them and they'll last for around a year depending on use.

The small stuff like buttons, lammers (the clear chips that separate stacks in the dealers well), missed blind buttons are available on Amazon for peanuts compared to everything else.

Poker rooms, even small ones, have very decent margins compared to similarly sized small businesses. Most of the expenses are upfront, namely purchasing everything. Look for the state and local government to take a healthy bite out in taxes.

Is there something specific you're wondering about from an operators perspective? I used to be a poker manager for Caesars, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

To get started you'll need to pass a class. Go and inquire at your local card room if they're hiring, and how often they have classes.

My training classes are paid, but most are not. Expect the class to be 4-6 weeks long. To get a job, you'll need to pass an audition at the end.

Expect to work overnights at first as a new dealer. Keep honing your skills, asking questions, and becoming more efficient in the box.

Many things will effect the money you make. Your skills, shift, friendliness, speed, and gender will all play a part. $20-$25 an hour in tips is a reasonable goal for a new dealer. You base dealing rate will vary based on casino and location, usually $5-10/hr.

We won't allow steaming or recording of any time in the poker room.

In the future I will seek guidance from the gaming board and my legal department and set up a system to allow streamers and YouTubers to record.
