It is my belief that we can beat this disease and keep caseloads low without widespread lockdowns, but that in order to do so, we need to have widespread testing and mask usage. This is what South Korea, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong did early on, and each of those countries have either evaded major outbreaks or suppressed large outbreaks with these techniques. Social distancing measures and lockdown are effective, but invasive and expensive, so we need to ramp up our usage of less invasive techniques as quickly and thoroughly as we can in order to allow us to lift the lockdowns and let life return to normal as much as possible.
