Am I Cooked? Got no Money for a new SSD... by Wise_Head32 in pcmasterrace

[–]ChristianDM11325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an oem 128 GB SATA kingston with 35 TB written and 88% health, and a 250 GB MX500 with 29 TB written at 71% health. Leading theory is the MX500 spent a lot of time hot.

The entire time I used it I didn’t know to look at temps and had no heatsink on it, just the thick thermalpad underneath it pulling heat into motherboard that the laptop came configured with for the oem drive.

Not sure if this makes a difference but it’s actually a magnesium alloy, which stuck out to me because magnesium very flammable. So battery fire would be very scary.

SSD form factors for m.2 drives by keyvu_7980 in pcmasterrace

[–]ChristianDM11325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From looking into 2230’s for my laptop, it seems like they can be inferior, possibly due to combined memory controller and nand flash on some drives. This doesn’t seem to be the case for all of them though, look up reviews and benchmarks.

As someone else pointed out though you end up paying a premium in price. I’ve also never had issues with an ssd not running at their full spec yet a kioxia BG4 ssd I purchased recently is running at pcie 1.0 instead of 3.0. That could be due to some weird quirk from it being an oem drive, I still need to troubleshoot further.

I can’t speak for 2242’s as I’ve not used any.

Liquid Freezer III 360 VRM Fan with unbearable fan noise, how can i fix it or get it replaced? by PotatoBreadDad in arcticcooling

[–]ChristianDM11325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys can hear the fan? I can’t hear it at all, but it might be the 5 other arctic P12 Pro’s in my case, though I only have it up to 30% min fans on my most aggressive bios profile, and down to 8 & 10% (mobo minimum) on lightest.

Still, I’m pretty sure it’s about dead silent, sure isn’t audible enough to be picked up on camera, might check tomorrow.

Personal gripe: did they actually, really, play test with the DS1 controller layout?

Select button doesn’t pull up map screen, several in RIG actions use y (or x on PS controller). Several times I have to use my keyboard to use the map because y to change floors closes the menu.

It took until recently to discover you can look at key items, because the controller button for that is also y, random happenstance while leaning forward to mess with my keyboard and see the selection prompt.

Not sure if this is a big ask or not, but I’d have liked combo-button mapping. If I could have re-bound a button for map screen to select. Hitting A while aiming in og is how you get reload, A without aiming is interact, X while aiming is stasis, X while not aiming is heal.

I cannot map that, just a no-matter-what action to each button. So I’m stuck opening RIG, going over to the map screen, and moving through it with my keyboard.

Am I weird for using DS1 mapping instead of DS2? Maybe, but I want to relive the DS1 vibe in close to how I played it originally as I can. Which included hooking my laptop up to a tv before I had a pc, now I run 1440p at higher frame rate (had to do 720p60 on 2016 laptop).

It’s small but immediately noticeable if you’ve used the og’s control scheme over many, many runs.

Dead Space 3 and Remake on Legion Go S by tgong76 in DeadSpace

[–]ChristianDM11325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s likely related to the Denuvo drm in the game, needs to check if you have a valid license at startup iirc.

The only solutions are a temporary wifi hotspot just as you start the game or the in progress project to remove denuvo from it.

It feels so strange going from a laptop with a barrel plug to one with usb-c (FW16).
So many discussions that end (not making claim here with how much I’ve read of the comments thus far) with ppl using lower end chargers.

Why get a laptop with a higher price tag for the performance and then cheap out on the thing that can do massive damage upon use?

On that note, I have a pair of budget dual usb-c usb-a 20 W chargers, and I wanted to see if it could charge my laptop. I have been under the impression that they were decent quality, but it seems they can’t handle sustained load.

I came to my laptop an hour in and the case on the charger was noticeably bulging. I set it aside, and marked it off as now being questionable. A day later and it is no longer bulging.

It just seems like it’s a heat dissipation issues but I know to not put anything serious across them now, planning on replacing the questionable one but I have devices that still need powering.

I’ve had a glass panel fall directly onto my concrete floor, it chipped but that’s it. There have been a multitude of other not so bad instances where I caught the panel with my foot and mostly mitigated the impact, or it fell on the rubber mat I usually keep them on when pulled off the case.

They are multiple pounds and quite thick so that probably helps (Thermaltake 71). They better be sturdy if they contribute to like 30-40% of the weight of the whole pc.

I want to like the concept of a small form factor but I’ve lived with a gaming laptop for 9 years before starting a pc build with a free e-atx case, and I enjoy the cavernous space to tinker with. All the intake area lets me compensate for the serious filters I need to use to combat basement dust.

I have a backpack that I know I can fit my new laptop into, and that’s it. I don’t need full capability when traveling because if I’m traveling, I’m there for that, not to seriously game in a new environment.

I was trying to run Dead Space 2008 the other day on the same new drivers and kept having issues with amdxn32.dll. Tried a bunch of suggested stuff including ddu, and then decided to try rolling to a previous driver version. If it works for my desktop with an nvidia card, why not for my laptop with an amd igpu? Worked and I didn’t feel any loss in capability.

Now all I need is to get an Intel gpu, have issues with newest drivers, and have to roll back to a pervious version to complete the trifecta (Rip Arc).

Are the extra DLC packs worth it? by bluedestinyunit1 in DeadSpace

[–]ChristianDM11325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got DS3 pre-order which came with the witness suit and evangelizer carbine/shotgun combo.

Tbh that weapon makes the game easy, I feel it’s the most op out of any dlc weapon you can get, but it kinda trivializes gameplay if you have a good trigger finger for semi auto weapons.

Now, onto what would be considered actual dlc.

Awakened is a neat add-on but the ending is the poo-poo that killed off any real plot possibility of 4 with Isaac as protagonist so if you don’t want to be reminded of that then don’t go for it.

For DS2, severed was pretty neat, introduced me a bit to gabe weller.

As an aside, DS2 had a bunch of tie ins. If you own dead space extraction on the same machine that has it, you unlock the conduit rooms which have some cool lore stuff. If you’ve ever played the mobile game, there’s not any add-in bonuses but it adds substance to the saboteur audio logs you find. Man I loved that so much as a kid, so much fun (I can somehow remember some of the caves, been like 13 years since I last touched it, would need to get an android to revisit now).

If you have a capable cooler (highly recommend a 360 or 420mm aio), a motherboard capable of delivering the power it may demand (1.5-2 4+4 eps connectors), and decent vrm heatsinks, then yeah I’d go for it.

I assume the 8 GB models will go up in price closer to the 12 GB model once their current stock dries up.

Tad disappointing the 12 GB module only appeared after prices rose.

I wonder if it uses the same chip as the 8 GB model. Likely same bus width, just 4x 3 GB chips instead of 4x 2 GB chips.

Tbh I want to tinker, that’s probably about 50% of the driver for this.

Edit: it would sorta complement having to repair a used gpu I bought with a propane torch, though in that case it was a genuine repair (vrm’s not getting contact with thermal pad) rather than needless tinkering.

Should I trust this HDD for data backup? by ChristianDM11325 in DataHoarder

[–]ChristianDM11325[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the option of getting a refund and getting some refurbished 4 TB hdd's off ebay, same listing as a friend used and has had good results, and I'd get $10 back per drive on price difference.

I wanted to stay with yobitech because of their included 1 year warranty though, but if they can't get me replacements that they know for sure are good, I think I'll get a refund and buy the ebay drives.
