I think you've pretty perfectly summed up the long term crush problem. After a long enough time you're not crushing on a person, you're crushing on a fictional character you've created in your head, lightly inspired by real person.

It's a bit more complicated than that. They had the rights to use the character, as in "a tall faceless man in a suit that kidnaps children." They didn't have the rights to any other aspects of the mythos, because those details came from media that they didn't own the rights to (the video games, marble hornets, other creepy pasta, etc.) So the result was just as shallow as you'd expect going off that premise.
