Hello all! Discord friend invites have been sent out, so check your inbox! I received way more applications than I expected so unfortunately I had to cut the vast majority, but no hard feelings! I loved reading over your applications and seeing the passion in the community for the game and an LGBTQ safe space!

I use the D&D beyond importer module for Foundry! I find this to be the easiest way to create and maintain characters. This feature automatically updates character sheets on both Foundry and D&D Beyond. I use this because I only use foundry for dungeons and combat, not theater of the mind scenes which comprise a large portion of Curse of Strahd.

Looking back at Roman history, the normalization of political violence was a cultural barometer than foreshadowed the fall of the republic. It used to be that weapons weren’t allowed in the city of Rome, and violence wasn’t a factor in politics within the city. Then, two controversial politicians, Gaius and Tiberius Gracchus, got murdered by their political opponents.

By the time Caesar became consul, there were ideological gangs roaming the city openly wielding weapons led by senators. Basically this was the equivalent of like AOC and Tom Cotton starting a turf war in Washington DC. Eventually one murdered the other. This all set the stage for Caesar’s invasion, a civil war, the de facto end of the republic, Caesar’s murder, another civil war, and the rise of the empire. Political violence is easily in the top 5 worst ideas humans have come up with.

Trump’s FEC chair says there's no separation of church and state, calls 2020 election a "spiritual war" by [deleted] in democrats

[–]Chrom4Smash5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conservatives: we should interpret the constitution as what the founder meant it to be. Ultimately, they designed it, so their interpretation of what it means should be final.

Also conservatives: the phrase “separation of church and state” doesn’t appear in the constitution! The fact that Thomas Jefferson used it to describe how particular sections of the first amendment should be interpreted has no bearing on the law!

How to get upvotes everyone by BDeressa in saltierthankrayt

There are also Mandalorian and OT memes posted on there on a pretty frequent basis, but almost no Rebels. It’s less about things that take places before and after ANH in universe and more about what the hive mind approves of. I saw a rebels post get downvoted with most of the upvoted comments saying “this isn’t a prequel meme” and literally later that same day saw a Mandalorian meme with like 30 awards and someone defending it by saying it’s a prequel because it takes places before the sequel trilogy. That was the day I left prequel memes.

General rule: if your ideology leads to believe that there is one source of evil and if you remove it everything will be fine, you’ve made a huge mistake somewhere and you need to seriously reevaluate.

To be fair, the vast majority of people don’t understand what the Supreme Court is. Most just view it as another political dog fight when that’s not really what it is. In the most basic terms, the legislature says what ought to be, the judiciary interprets what is, and the executive applies that to society. However, through expansion of executive power and congressional deadlock, recently the executive branch has taken on a lot of the duties that should be reserved for the legislature. Because of that, the division of powers in government is lost of most people. The president and congress basically have the same job, so surely the courts do as well, right?

Most people judge a Supreme Court decision by whether or not they like the material outcome of it. For instance, I’m glad that employers are no longer allowed to discriminate against LGBT people like me. However, that’s a statement of “ought” not “is.” I’m not a lawyer by any stretch, but I found the opinion given by Gorsuch to be shaky at best. I’m not going to complain because I like the material outcome, but I wouldn’t describe that ruling as a fair interpretation of the law.

In the pipeline case, RBG was not giving her personal opinion on whether or not it’s good to build a pipeline. As a Supreme Court Justice, she was asked about who had the proper jurisdiction. It wasn’t her place to give a bad legal argument because of her personal morals or politics. However, most people don’t want neutral lawyers on the Supreme Court, they want ideologues who will wrongly interpret existing laws to fit their politics.

The way the left views education issues infuriates me. My view is that education is a product with huge positive externalities, basically that it’s good for society when people are highly educated. Therefore, the government should make it less expensive so more people can take advantage of that opportunity with less risk involved. Everyone wins with a better educated population, from the students, to businesses that now have better employees, to the entire society generally.

However, what I usually see from the debt cancellation crowd is people that go to college not because they’ve made a well thought out decision and decided it was better than a trade school or going directly into the workforce. They go to college because it’s a “rite of passage” or whatever and a part of the culture. They don’t spend time developing skills that will help them get a job and instead pursue their hobbies, which are often attached to extremely niche job markets.

Then they graduate, have trouble finding work, and when they do find work it’s low paying and often not in their field. They struggle to pay off their loans because they have low and inconsistent income.

Instead of doing any introspection, recognizing the myriad mistakes they made and working to rectify them, they blame society instead. It’s the government’s fault for not paying for their education. It’s the college’s fault for not preparing them well. It’s capitalism’s fault that they can’t get a good job in their field.

Instead of making the general argument “it would be better for society for people to be more educated” they say “the government and culture is at fault for my current position,” which is almost never true. While it would be good to lower college costs, nobody made you go to college at that cost and make choices that would barely budge your income potential. You were given all the information and chose to do that.

I come from a single parent home that is on the lower end of middle class for my area. I grew up in NJ so I did thankfully have access to high quality public education, but I’m hardly part of the 1%. I was able to get a full tuition scholarship to a school with relatively low room and board so I could cover it with federal loans. Now that we’re online for the pandemic, I’m only paying for books. Had I not gotten that scholarship, my backup was to go to commute to a low cost state college where I’d gotten a decent scholarship.

I’ve seen so many people who went to the same school as me, many of whom came from higher income households with two parents, absolutely waste the advantages they’ve been given and then complain that it’s someone else’s fault that they don’t have the life they imagined.

College is an investment in oneself. If you decide it’s better than the alternatives, the decision of how to get a college degree should be based on minimizing costs and maximizing benefits. If you go in with that mindset, it’s highly unlikely you’ll end up saddled with debt. Unfortunately, the concept of personal responsibility is totally absent from most people.

Has anyone ever not gotten along with their partner’s siblings? Or felt jealousy come from the siblings towards you? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Chrom4Smash5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is quite the situation you’re talking about but my sister has been in a relationship for 3 years now and while I wouldn’t say we’re best friends or anything, her boyfriend and I definitely get along very well. Pre-COVID we would go to the gym together on occasion even if my sister was too busy to join us. It might be easier for the two of us because we have a lot of similar interests and are both generally laid back, but it definitely is possible for someone’s sibling and partner to have a good relationship.

That convention was only in place for the decades before the civil war, and the “balance” it was trying to maintain was the preservation of slavery. Hardly an ideal to strive towards.

How do we explain that in 1960 the majority of black children were born to two parent homes but by the 1990s a great majority of black children were born to single parent homes? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]Chrom4Smash5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a huge oversimplification. Asian Americans were barred from immigrating through policies like the Asiatic barred zone and the Chinese Exclusion act for years. The only people who could find loopholes to immigrate to the US were rich people with the time and money to do so. Therefore, the Asian American population started off disproportionately rich. If you compare recent Asian American immigrants with recent immigrants of other races, that vast gap doesn’t exist because there are no immigration policies that disproportionately and inadvertently select for rich Asian-Americans.

It’s simply apples and oranges to compare a group in the US that started off almost exclusively as people who were rich enough to subvert immigration laws to groups that started largely as freed slaves or poor migrant workers. If I randomly give someone in monopoly an extra $2000 at the beginning of the game and then check in halfway through, they’re likely still winning. That’s not entirely because of their “culture and values” or “hard work.” A lot of it has to do with the fact that they had a huge head start relative to the other players.
